Dear friends,
A quick report on the full contact Pro Taekwon-Do Tournament of last
month. The Russian Taekwon-Do fighter, Andrey Krylov came out as Grand
Champion again, walking away with the $50 000 prize money. The prize
money he won last year was $30 000. The 24 year old Krylov, weighed in
at 90 kg and is 185 cm tall. His final fight was against American
Taekwon-Do fighter, Raymond Daniels, whom is 188 cm tall and weighed
in at 81 kg.
All the quarter finals, semi finals and final matches can be seen on
the Pro Taekwon-Do website:
http://www.pro-taekwondo.com/ or on
YouTube.
Also on the website are some demos that was part of the show, which
including an interesting combination of the pattern Gwang Gae and the
Tango; as well as a demonstration by the ATJ Lučko (the anti-terrorist
unit of the police of Croatia).
ITF President, Prof. Chang Ung sent a message of congratulations to
the organizers, in particular to Master Anto Nobilo, stating that he
hoped for the continued collaboration "in the field of ITF Pro -
Competition". With the successes of the last couple of Pro Taekwon-Do
World Championships, it is likely that full contact ITF Taekwon-Do
will become a fixed niche in our martial art.
Personally I think this is a good thing, as it caters for the needs of
some ITF practitioners that feel a need for full contact competition.
These practitioners are often lost to kickboxing organizations. I can
only wonder if similar tournaments that include clinch distance
fighting and grappling will also eventually find room within the
greater ITF community; for there is no doubt in my mind that we also
have ITF practitioners that feel a need for opportunities to compete
in tournaments that include both in stand up and ground fighting.
Any thoughts?
Regards,
Sanko
Ps. I'm leaving for South Africa tomorrow and with any luck I hope to
stumble across some of you on my short break in the country. I'm
especially looking forward to the summer heat. It's been below zero
(often as cold as -10 degrees Celcius) here in Korea for many days
now.
