Butwhen we popped the hood on this particular car, we saw that the engineers were generous enough to give us an entire inch of space to work with. The transverse-mounted four-cylinder engine placed the serpentine drive laughably close to the passenger side inner fender and shock tower. Good luck getting anything more than a finger in there.

First, full disclosure: This particular job required far more than just relaxing the arm to remove the belt. We had to jack the car up, then remove the wheel and inner fender liner to reinstall the belt around the lower crank and A/C compressor pulleys.

To install the new one, we basically reversed the process, slipping the new belt around the lower crank and A/C compressor pulleys first, before moving up top and pushing the tensioner arm forward with one hand (using the tool) while deftly stretching the new belt over the topmost pulleys with our other.

This tool is used to remove and install belts on serpentine belt systems using the spring loaded idler pulley. Fits idler pulleys requiring 13mm, 14mm, 15mm, 16mm, 18mm, 19mm hex and both 3/8" and 1/2" square drive sizes. For applications with limited access, 13mm and 16mm sockets are built into the handle. This tool covers most domestic and some import applications.Comes with extension for hard-to-reach idler pulleys. Eight low profile sockets and extension help to fit into tight spots. Includes 19mm socket for Honda and Toyota applications.

The serpentine belt tool is a special tool for removing or installing a serpentine belt. The tool is commonly used on modern vehicles that utilize automatic belt tensioners. The tool is supposed to make the procedure less frustrating, safer, and less time-consuming. It allows you to carry out the process without removing any part, which is a lot more convenient.

Removing or replacing the serpentine involves two processes: taking it out and placing it or a new one back. As you can guess, you need two different tools to makes the process more convenient. So there are two types of belt tools that you can buy today: the serpentine belt removal tool and serpentine belt installation tool. Here is more about them.

The serpentine belt removal tool helps you relax the tensioner and loosen the belt for easier removal. It usually comes as a kit and is the main tool that you need for the replacement job. The kit contains tools pieces to move the tensioner and others to fit different tensioner bolt configurations.

The serpentine belt installation tool is typically a long and thin rod with a forked end comprising either 2 or 3 prongs. The tool helps you grab and direct the belt during installation, allowing you to place it around the pulleys with ease. You can also call it a serpentine belt guide tool, serpentine belt grabber tool, or serpentine belt alignment tool.

Just like many other tools to service cars, the tool for serpentine belt removal comes as a set. The set contains pieces to fit different cars. This means a tool that you can use with many different car makes and models. The serpentine belt tool kit contains these tools and attachments or adapters:

The serpentine belt tensioner tool- the long metal bar- is made to fit over the tensioner stud (the bracket with a bolt sticking out of it) or opening. It sometimes comes with a shorter bar or ratcheting wrench to increase leverage.

Two pieces also allow you to rotate the belt tensioner from different angles or positions, which further eases the task. Depending on your type of car, you may need to use one bar or two bars. There are also cars that need you to use the serpentine belt grabbing tool.

Before working or your car, park it on level ground and properly secure it with the necessary equipment. Ensure the engine is cool and the battery disconnected to avoid accidents. Ensure also that you have the serpentine belt tool set with you, then proceed to the steps listed below.

Your serpentine belt tool kit will come with several pieces: a long and shot bar or ratcheting wrench, crowfoot pieces, sockets, and adapters. Find the socket or adapter to use with your application. Depending on the type of car, you may also choose to use one or two bars.

Attach the correct pulley tensioner tool combination to the tensioner stud or opening. If need be, attach a second bar to improve leverage and make everything much easier. Rotate the automatic tensioner slowly to slacken the serp belt. Continue holding the tensioner in its relaxed state.

Remove the loosened belt from around the pulleys. Be sure the mark its direction, so you do not put it the wrong way during installation. Release the tensioner back to its former position, do so slowly. The tensioner uses a strong spring that may cause damage if released quickly.

Check to see if the old belt requires replacing by looking for signs of wear or damage. Using the reverse of removal, install the new belt. If the space is to cramped, use the serpentine belt hook tool discussed earlier. Again, take care to rotate and release the belt tensioner slowly. Finally, remove the serpentine belt pulley tool or tools. Confirm that the belt is well placed across all pulleys

How do you identify the best serpentine belt tool? There are several things that you can look out for when purchasing a serp belt installation or removal kit. These include the number of pieces and material quality.

The best serpentine belt tool is made from a strong material, especially the long and thin bars that you will be using to rotate the tensioner. Ensure, also, that the handle of the pulley tensioner tool is made from non-slip rubber for a much firmer grip.

The serpentine belt removal tool costs around $45 to $75 for most kits. The guide or belt installation tool is often purchased separately. It costs around $30. That means you need less than a hundred dollars to add the serpentine belt removal tool to your collection of car servicing tools.

Replacing a serpentine belt is easy if you have the right tools for the job. The belt winds across several pulleys and sits in a cramped space, which makes the task difficult. A serpentine belt tool makes things easier for you. You only need to know how to use it. Ensure, too that you have the required tools. The steps describing how to use a serpentine belt tool in this post will work for most tools and applications.

There is no tensioner, you need a specially tool ridiculously named a Universal Stretchy Belt Installer (GM EN-51767-2 - Universal Stretchy Belt Installer). Gimme a few minutes and Ill get the write-up for you.

I tried the Lisle tool. Does not fit on 2019 Trailboss crank shaft pulley. Called some dealerships - they wont sell me the blue Stretchy Belt Installer pictured above due to patent. Not having a tensioner in there is borderline retarded. Good luck. I'm stuck in my own driveway like a genius.

Not sure if you have room on the T1, but my l83 K2 truck used a stretch belt for the brake vac pump. I used zip ties as I didn't have access to a stretch belt tool once i was in there. Cut the belt off of course. Worked perfectly.

Thanks. I've modified the Lisle tool to fit over the lip of the crank shaft pulley. Will give it a go. If it doesn't work I will have to take it into the shop and have them do it. Not a lot of options for me - live alone in remote mountain area at 10k ft, foot of snow on the ground, no garage, below freezing outside - there's only so much of that I can handle when I'm lying on the frozen ground with 20 mph cross winds. it gets old real quick like. Absolutely ridiculous. Had an old Tahoe I drove to 300k miles - so easy to work on....same 5.3L V8.

Just did mine last week. 7 normal size zip ties for serpentine belt. 2 broke, first one when it was bout of the way on and second when it was right at the end but it got it done. I would buy some decent zip ties if u r in colder weather cause I know the cheap ones tend to break very easy when they r cold.

Proper belt tension is important. Too little tension can lead to tooth jump or "skipping." Too much tension can cause wear and damage. Here are several tools to ensure the best tension and the smoothest ride.

Gates Krikit Gauge is small enough to fit in your bike pack and sits right on top of your belt, allowing for single-finger tension testing through the click of a button. Easy-breezy. In Europe, the Eco Tension Tester is a popular way to set belt tensions using gravity and a suspended weight.

Ideal for factory use, Gates SureFit Installation Tool offers easier installation of all SureFit sprockets, which have been engineered with a flexible finger design and a slight interference fit to achieve the best installation on internally geared hubs.

Made for factory use, Gates Sonic Tension Meter measures belt tension by analyzing the harmonic characteristics of a vibrating belt. This meter allows precision tension testing on a high-volume of bikes outfitted with Gates Carbon Drive.
