We are excited to announce the EASP small group meeting on “New Directions in Intercultural Gender Research”, which will be held from April 22 to 24, 2026, in Bad Honnef near Bonn, Germany. The meeting aims to enhance our understanding of gender dynamics across cultural contexts and foster future research collaborations.

Gender research has a long tradition in social psychology. However, most findings rely on WEIRD (Western, educated, industrialized, rich, democratic; e.g., Henrich et al., 2010) samples and theories and methodologies developed in the US or other Western countries (Rad et al., 2018). This raises the question of whether findings can be generalized to different contexts or vary culturally. In a globalized world with increasing diversification of societies, understanding gender dynamics within and across various cultural contexts is gaining importance. Further, despite its potential, intercultural gender research has recently faced increased challenges. Current sociopolitical movements spark new debates on how (intercultural) gender research can be organized, making this meeting even more timely.

Bringing together senior and junior researchers, this meeting will explore key topics such as gender stereotypes and roles, discrimination, sexism, inequality, and gender-differentiated behavior. The meeting welcomes diverse perspectives on culture and gender, including research on gender diversity and nonbinary identities. We will discuss the characteristics, chances, and challenges of gender research in an intercultural context and explore new directions in this important field, including intercultural theory development, utilizing different data sets and sources (e.g., collaborative data, panel data, big data), and advancing methodological approaches (e.g., AI and web data, behavioral measures). The meeting provides ample opportunities to network and exchange ideas. In addition to individual talks, there will be interactive formats to foster exchange.

Confirmed keynote speakers are:

Prof. Dr. Natasza Kosakowska-Berezecka, Cross-Cultural Psychology and Psychology of Gender, University of Gdańsk, Poland

Prof. Dr. Ernesto Reuben, Economics, Business, Organizations, and Society, New York University Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates

The meeting takes place at the conference hotel Seminars in Bad Honnef, Germany (https://www.seminaris.de/en/hotels/conference-hotel-bad-honnef/), which is easily accessible by train and from nearby airports (Cologne/Bonn, Frankfurt am Main). There is no participation fee. Coffee breaks (all days), lunch (days 2 and 3), and dinner (days 1 and 2) will be provided. Attendees will have to pay 96€/per night for accommodation, including breakfast. The meeting also includes a social event.

Researchers interested in participating are invited to submit an abstract (maximum length 250 words) via the application form: https://ww2.unipark.de/uc/EASP_intercultural_gender/

We offer two travel stipends for interested researchers who lack funding for travel and accommodation. Priority will be given to researchers from underrepresented groups and the Global South. The application form (see above) provides more information.
