Dear all,

A few years ago, as part of my research into the history of experimental economics, I created a comprehensive list of past & existing experimental economics labs. I also tried to contact everyone who was involved in establishing these labs. Since then, the list was occasionally updated, but this needs to be done in a more systematic fashion. In the past week I have added over 60 new labs to the list but have not contacted them directly yet as I did in the past (highlighted in yellow in columns F and H). Therefore, I seek your collective assistance with updating it:

Anyone with this link can see and comment on the file but cannot rewrite the information directly. That allows me to keep the entries as consistent as possible. In case there are issues to be clarified, please send me a message or leave a comment in the cell in question. Labs that closed in the past few years are of particular interest.

The entire list including closed labs stands at 355 entries in 43 countries. There is also the issue of which labs to include in the list, i.e. how to classify whether a lab is an experimental economics lab. I have excluded pure neuroeconomics labs, labs with exclusive affiliations with psychology or non-economics departments. But there is a grey area of behavioral labs or labs affiliated with business schools — some are on my list (especially when I got direct feedback from them that they do experimental economics experiments in the past), and some are not. It has been my policy to as inclusive as possible.

Many thanks in advance for your input!

All the best,

Andrej

Dear all,

Many thanks for your help updating the list. Special thanks go to Brent Bigler, who added columns for Recruiting software, Recruiting URL & Recruiting notes to an earlier version of the list. The updated list also contains a separate column for lab URL. Some of the URLs might be out of date, so please check them for your labs.

The updated list contains 375 entries. That’s 20 more than a month ago. 337 labs are tagged as open, but likely some of them are closed. Most of the open labs are in the US (87) and Germany (42). 21 countries have just one lab and each inhabited continent has at least one lab. For 123 labs the operating recruiting software is unknown, and 103 labs use Orsee, 42 Sona Systems, and 35 Hroot. Shanghai is the city with  most labs (six), but the data for China are unfortunately not the most reliable. Sydney has 5 labs, followed by Melbourne, Beijing, and Tokyo with 4.

Any additions and corrections would be most appreciated.

Best wishes,
