Dear ESA Community,

we are delighted to advertise a Mini-course on Open Science & Meta-analysis for PhD students and early-career researchers, which will take place from September 1 to September 3, 2025 at the Masaryk University in Brno (Czech Republic) before the 2025 European ESA Meeting. The mini-course is jointly taught by Felix Holzmeister (University of Innsbruck) and Matteo M. Marini (University of Bologna).

Content of the Mini-course

This mini-course offers a critical examination of the “rules of the game” in science, highlighting common issues that threaten the credibility of scientific findings. Relatedly, it presents key remedies such as power calculations, confirmatory research through pre-registration, and open and transparent research practices. The mini-course also covers the fundamentals of meta-analysis – a method for systematically combining results from multiple studies to assess consistency, resolve conflicting findings, and improve the precision of effect size estimates.

By the end of the course, students will understand why and how common research (mal)practices can lead to low levels of replicability and reliability. They will grasp the value of confirmatory research and transparent research practices, and will be able to perform power calculations, sensitivity analyses, and design pre-analysis plans. They will learn to critically assess research projects for integrity and ethics.

Students will also gain an understanding of the advantages of conducting meta-analyses over narrative literature reviews, and will become familiar with the procedures to select studies, choose summary statistics, moderators, and models. Students will be able to conduct a meta-analysis using Stata, including such steps as heterogeneity assessment, subgroup analysis, meta-regression, and bias detection and mitigation.
