Dear friends and colleagues,

We invite submissions on bounded rationality for a special issue of JEBO honoring Reinhard Selten.

On the tenth anniversary of Reinhard Selten’s passing, this Special Issue honors his pioneering work on bounded rationality, experimentation, and models of decision making.

Bounded rationality improves on traditional neoclassical models by emphasizing cognitive limits, time constraints, complexity, and information scarcity, leading to models featuring satisficing, heuristics, learning, reasoning, and aspiration adaptation. Recent research highlights the role of emotions, motivation, social norms, fairness perceptions, regret, and risk attitudes in shaping behavior and decision processes.

Special issue information:
We particularly welcome work on cognitive limitations and complexity, search processes, aspiration levels, adaptive goal formulation, expectation formation, fast and frugal heuristics, and the adaptive toolbox of decision making. Contributions addressing conscious and unconscious processes, or learning dynamics, are also encouraged, as are models using algorithms to capture microeconomic behavior.
Interdisciplinary submissions from behavioral and experimental economics and finance, psychology, marketing, and related fields—including theoretical papers, empirical studies, reviews, and case analyses—are invited to advance descriptive and normative understanding of human judgment and decision processes.

Manuscript submission information:
Submission Open Date: 15 April 2026

Submission Deadline: 31 December 2026

Papers must be submitted electronically via the Elsevier Editorial System site for the Journal here. To ensure that all manuscripts are correctly identified for inclusion in the special issue, it is important to select "VSI: Bounded rationality" when you reach the “Article Type” step in the submission process.
Keywords:
bounded rationality, cognitive limits, constraints, scarcity, satisficing, heuristics, learning, reasoning, aspiration adaptation, emotions, social norms, fairness perceptions, regret, risk attitudes, decision processes

Best wishes,
