Three North Shaolin teachers are called on by the Manchus to teach their soldiers and are urged to challenge the current South Shaolin teachers. They defeat the South Shaolin teachers and, that night, the head general kills the South Shaolin teachers and blames their death on the North Shaolin teachers. The South Shaolin master sends more of his pupils, who are killed accidentally by the North Shaolin teachers. He finally sends two more of his students to train with old masters and trains one student himself with the goal of finally defeating the North Shaolin experts.

That Chiang Sheng was one pretty ass motherfucker! A young Dick Wei unceremoniously gets his ass kicked in the beginning of this movie. Martial arts cinema is famous for its abundance of questionable old age makeup but I truly feel that Chan Shen as "Elder Mai Qi" is one of the most egregious examples.

I think Chang Cheh's training sequences are underrated; the ones in this film, Shaolin Temple, and Five Shaolin Masters are all so damn good. Obviously Lau Kar Leung is still the king of training sequences, but I'd say Cheh is second only to him... or maybe Yuen Woo Ping is second and Cheh is third? Either way, pretty good company to be in competition with.

An unscrupulous general tries to wipe out the armies of North and South Shaolin by tricking them into fighting each other to the death. The South Shaolin dudes aren't quite up to the challenge yet, so we get to watch them train. And train. And train.

This is nice-looking Shaw stuff with some pretty swell fighting, especially the suitably bloody finale, but gosh is there a lot of beating around the bush. The characterizations are too bland for me to care who's who most of the time, with the exception of the baby-faced Sheng Chiang, who's a weirdly compelling screen presence.

Great first third build up and phenomenal finale if you can lush through a dry middle portion of uninteresting training sequences. Pretty good story of deception of power. The best martial arts films have brutality and Invincible Shaolin isn't overtly gruesome or anything but there are a few scenes of ribs bursting through chests after a blow. Those little touches like that elevate the experience.

This kung-fu film is set apart from the others I have watched. All due to the dramatic flourishes found in it. In this one the Manchu government has set up the North and South Shaolin clans. Pitting them against each other. Causing loss of lives. Which leads to vengeance seeking.
In this one it is clan above all else. Which gives the ending a tragic feel. There is a villian but by the time he is revealed. It is too late for the good guys.
All I have to say about the action is that there is much more blood than usual. Perhaps to add to the drama. To highlight the loss.
In this Shaolin is not invincible but it still stands. Bloody and defiant.

I'm going to come straight out and say it... Invincible Shaolin is not one of Chang Cheh's best films. Apart from the last 15 minutes or so, this is quite the chore to get through. The Shaolin on Shaolin plot is needlessly complicated, and in a way, confusing. The way this is told does not make it clear right away who the "heroes" are, and all the training actually gets boring after a while. I remember selling my DVD of this years ago because I didn't like it the first time I saw it, and... Apart from the ending, this is the case this time around as well. Unless you are a Cheh completist, or have the Arrow box set, there's no reason to seek this one out.
