Black paint is a toxic, sentient, and corrupted form of paint. It can be considered the overarching antagonist of Paper Mario: Color Splash, taking the form of Black Bowser. During the events of Paper Mario: Color Splash, Black Paint is formed after Bowser mixes the paint in the Prisma Fountain. Bowser gets the black paint on his shell, and it covers his whole body, possessing him. Using Bowser's body, the Black Paint attempts to purge Prism Island of life and colored paint. In game, Mario will take damage when he touches black paint. Black paint has been observed as being capable of being able to quickly multiply and can also form into other objects such as hammers or Lava Bubbles.
Black paint is a sentient, evil, corrupted, and toxic form of paint in Paper Mario: Color Splash. It is created when all six of the normal colors of paint are haphazardly mixed together, as shown when Roy Koopa mixes up all of Mario's paint in his battle and when Bowser spins around in his shell in Prisma Fountain, mixing all of the colors together. Throughout the events of the game, it possesses Bowser (turning him into Black Bowser) into stealing the Big Paint Stars of Port Prisma and ordering his minions to drain the island and its inhabitants of their color. Roy Koopa also used black paint in his battle against Mario and Huey, but it did not seem to impact his thoughts.

The black keys are used to open the large black chests Mario comes across on his quest. There are four Black Keys that appear in total. Each one opens a respective Black Chest found within the same chapter and area as the key. The Black Chest opened by these keys contain a Black Chest Demon, which, upon the opening of the chest, "curses" the opener. When Mario opens one, he masters a new paper-based ability on foot. The Black Keys should be easy to find since they are usually close to a Black Chest.
Black Bowser (simply referred to in-battle as Bowser) is the form Bowser took after he was possessed by black paint in Paper Mario: Color Splash. He serves as the main antagonist and final boss of the game.
At Port Prisma on Prism Island, various Toads were enjoying playing with the various colors of paint available. Bowser, who was looking from above, jumped into the rainbow-colored Prisma Fountain with the intent of giving his shell a rainbow hue. However, his jumping around the paint caused him to inadvertently create black paint, which proceeded to possess Bowser (turning him into Black Bowser) into stealing the Big Paint Stars and ordering his minions to drain the island and its inhabitants of their color. He later wants this paint to get mixed up and cover the whole world with the black paint. As Black Bowser, he is more malevolent and mean-spirited than normal, willing even to drain Princess Peach's color out of annoyance after he catches her sending Mario messages, as well as making a dark joke after the fact when confronting Mario and mentioning his draining of Peach by saying she claimed she was "framed". In addition, his roar is slightly deeper and more warbled than normal.
Following the collection of the remaining Big Paint Stars, Mario and Huey go to Black Bowser's Castle via a kart ride from Luigi across Rainbow Road. Here, after overcoming some tribulations (including fighting Roy), Mario and Huey confront and eventually defeat Black Bowser, ridding him of the black paint and returning him to his normal self.
In the first phase of the battle, Black Bowser's attacks against Mario involve breathing fire, jumping on Mario, and spinning inside his shell at Mario. All of these attacks can be blocked in order to decrease damage sustained with correct timing. As Mario attacks Black Bowser, the black paint will fall from him onto the ground, which can form into Black Lava Bubbles. The Black Lava Bubbles vary in size and HP depending on how much damage was done to Bowser within the turn. If Mario fails to defeat them within one attack turn, they can attack Mario and return to Black Bowser, restoring some of his HP. The first phase of the battle is completed when 350 damage is dealt and the black paint is completely removed from Bowser's head, temporarily reverting him to his senses.
In the second phase of the battle, the black paint returns to Bowser and increases his size, making him more powerful. In Bowser's first attack, Huey notices that the black paint just comes back to Bowser and attacks cannot be blocked. As a result, Huey turns himself into a card, allowing Mario to revert him to his 3D form. After this happens, Huey can contain the black paint blocked by Mario. However, he warns Mario that he can only withstand about ten of Bowser's attacks, telling him to make them count. In this phase of the battle, Black Bowser has a few extra attacks. The following attack he uses is determined by the amount of black paint he has pooled around him after Mario's turn. If he has no black paint, Bowser will slowly walk up to Mario and then breathe fire at him, similar to the first phase of the fight, except it deals more damage. If he has a small amount of black paint, he will summon a ball of black paint (about the size of Mario) and throw it at him for 48 damage. If he has a larger amount of black paint, he will turn it into a giant black paint hammer, which he uses to smash Mario for 72 damage. Finally, if he has a large amount of black paint, he will jump into his shell and start spinning in it with the black paint surrounding him as if it became a tornado. He will charge into Mario, dealing 96 damage. When he loses enough HP, he will become enraged and will start to execute his attacks much faster and become slightly more powerful. Now, his black paint ball deals 50 damage, his hammer deals 75 damage, and his shell deals 100 damage. Unlike in the first half, for example, the hammer takes a significant amount of time to charge up, but after suffering enough damage, Black Bowser's hammer swings much earlier than before. When he is at 100 HP and almost defeated, he initiates his final, most powerful attack. In so doing, he uses up all his black paint and his own paint to fire a massive black paint ball at Mario. If Mario fails to defend against the attack, he takes 120 damage, which is more than half of his maximum of 200 HP, and the black paint returns to Bowser, restoring almost half of his HP. If Mario successfully defends against the attack and is not knocked out by it, he takes 60 damage (but his health won't drop below 1) and Bowser is left on his shell, helpless. Mario can then hit him with any attack to end the battle and emerge victorious.
In one of the early designs, Black Bowser was going to be normal Bowser possessed by a black cape with yellow eyes. As a consequence, his cuffs and eyes would have shone of a bright yellow, while the sclera would have become black. A new design instead was a recolored Bowser in which the mouth, the eyes, the eyebrows and the hair were red, the spikes, the horns and the sclera were yellow, while the rest was in greyscale. A different version of said design would have had some of the coloring of Bowser being still visible, except for the back of the shell, while the pupils and irises would have not been visible, some parts like the hair would have shone and drops of paint would have continually evaporated from him. Two designs more similar to the final one were attempted, with Bowser covered in black paint, the red tongue being visible and the eyes being red with a yellow sclera. Both a version in which the claws, horns and spikes were still normally colored and a version in which they were fully covered by black paint were drawn. Finally, some poses of the early designs were drawn: one of him looking behind surprised, one of him looking at someone going up in front of him, one of him breathing fire, one of him blocking someone with his hands, and one of him spinning in his shell.
After receiving the Lucky Star from Twink, Mario reenters Toad Town and must pass a group of Black Toads blocking his way. Normally Mario would have to talk to the Black Toads, sit through a long cutscene with Merlon, and then sit through another cutscene with Merlon and the black toads before being able to proceed. Instead of this, you can perform one of the two versions of Black Toad skip, or Merlon skip in order skip some or all of these cutscenes, thus saving time. Both forms of Black Toad Skip save significantly more time than Merlon skip, however Black Toad Skip is also significantly more difficult to perform and can be an early run killer. It is advised that Merlon skip is used only after you attempt to learn Black Toad Skip. This skip is used for all glitched categories.
Upon entering, use Luigi's super-jump to leap to the cloud above. Skip past the door, as there's nothing but enemies inside, and hop on the platform to the right. Use Luigi's Super-Jump at the apex of the platform's height to reach another cloud. Flip to 3D at the sign to find a hidden path that leads to another door. Inside, use Thudley to knock down the black fruit. Feel free to eat a couple (they restore 1hp each), but make sure to save one for Peach.

Feed Princess Peach the black apple (aka the taboo fruit) to awaken her. Delighted, she'll rejoin your party. It's a good thing too, because without her floating ability, you wouldn't be traversing much further.
As Bowser leaped and frolicked within the fountain, the collision of different paint colors unexpectedly resulted in the creation of a dark and ominous black paint. To Bowser's astonishment, this black paint possessed him, transforming him into a malevolent alter ego known as Black Bowser. Driven by his newfound malevolence, Black Bowser devised a wicked plan to steal the Big Paint Stars and command his minions to drain the island and its inhabitants of their vibrant colors. Driven by his insidious intentions, Black Bowser not only desired to control the island but also sought to spread his black paint throughout the entire world, ensnaring every corner in its dark embrace. Embracing his malicious nature, he even went so far as to drain Princess Peach's color, out of sheer annoyance upon discovering her secret communication with Mario. To add insult to injury, Black Bowser callously joked about framing her during his encounter with Mario, displaying his twisted sense of humor. In his transformed state, Black Bowser's roar echoed with a deeper and more unsettling resonance, further highlighting the malevolence that now consumed him. On the vibrant Prism Island, located at Port Prisma, a group of cheerful Toads were joyfully engaging in various activities involving the colorful and mesmerizing paint that adorned the island. From high above, Bowser observed the lively scene and, overcome by his mischievous nature, impulsively decided to dive into the Prisma Fountain, hoping to give his shell a stunning rainbow hue. Little did he know that his reckless actions would lead to an unintended consequence.
