Apache JMeter may be used to test performance both on static and dynamic resources, Web dynamic applications.
It can be used to simulate a heavy load on a server, group of servers, network or object to test its strength or to analyze overall performance under different load types.

The freeware stress test tool HeavyLoad was developed to bring your PC to its limits. It can be installed on any edition of Windows and client/server versions (32-bit and 64-bit) currently supported by Microsoft.
HeavyLoad puts your workstation or server PC under a heavy load and lets you test whether they will still run reliably.

HeavyLoad can test dedicated graphics cards from AMD and NVIDIA in all performance classes as well as integrated graphics chips (iGPUs) from Intel or AMD processors. Select or deselect them individually.

Heavyload is a System Utilities Benchmarking software developed by JAM Software GmbH. To stress your PC or server, HeavyLoad writes a large test-file to the temp folder, it allocates physical and virtual memory, performs complex calculations and it draws patterns in its window.

Load testing is a specific sub-family of a performance test that includes many concurrent users running the same program at the same time. This is done to see whether a system infrastructure can handle the load without compromising functionality or just with acceptable performance degradation.

Front-end performance testing measures how fast your website loads and displays content for users. In contrast, back-end performance testing involves sending multiple requests to your servers to see if they can handle simultaneous requests. Most performance testing tools only test API endpoints, but tools like xk6-browser go beyond that by testing browser performance as well.

Performance testing tools, in general, are critical to customer satisfaction. They will move on to your competitor if your application performance doesn't meet your customer's expectations or all service level agreements.

Load testing vs. other tests is one of the most misunderstood parts of performance testing. And there are many load testing best practices you should be aware of before even using one of the tools listed below.

This list only includes open source and free options for the top load testing tools for automated performance testing and API load tests, so you can just download and get started right away without spending a dime.

For instance, JMeter can be a bit difficult to scale for a large distributed test, especially if you have to set up a bunch of machines since you have to configure them to talk to each other. There is also a host of orchestrating problems in executing large JMeter tests.

You can actually describe a full-blown script in about ten lines of text, allowing teams to describe their tests in a YAML or JSON file. The YAML is a human, readable, edible approach that enables you to describe a test in a simple text file.

But performance engineering expert Todd DeCapua in a previous PerfGuild conference session, recommended using Fiddler with Watcher and BlackWidow to create a quick-start automation testing performance solution.

The Grinder is a Java-based framework. It provides you with easy-to-run and -create distributed testing solutions using many load generator machines to capture your end-users response times. So you don't have to worry about any virtual user restrictions.

Also new for 2023, K6 creates xk6. xk6-browser is an extension for K6, a performance testing tool. It provides browser automation and end-to-end web testing capabilities, allowing you to measure both front-end and back-end performance using a single tool. xk6-browser offers a unique hybrid approach to performance testing by combining protocol-level tests with browser-level tests, giving you a more comprehensive and realistic view of your web application's performance.

xk6-browser currently supports Chromium, with plans to support other browsers in the future. You can interact with page elements, execute actions, and perform various checks using CSS selectors. The tool also provides browser-specific performance metrics, such as DOM content loaded, first contentful paint, and first meaningful paint.

LoadRunner tends to be one of the most common enterprise-wide load testing tools, but many of these open-source tools can get you most of the functionality you need. Also, most of these tool protocols can be used for both performance testing web applications and performance testing web services.

This paper describes a protocol for induction of moderate psychological stress in a laboratory setting and evaluates its effects on physiological responses. The 'Trier Social Stress Test' (TSST) mainly consists of an anticipation period (10 min) and a test period (10 min) in which the subjects have to deliver a free speech and perform mental arithmetic in front of an audience. In six independent studies this protocol has been found to induce considerable changes in the concentration of ACTH, cortisol (serum and saliva), GH, prolactin as well as significant increases in heart rate. As for salivary cortisol levels, the TSST reliably led to 2- to 4-fold elevations above baseline with similar peak cortisol concentrations. Studies are summarized in which TSST-induced cortisol increases elucidated some of the multiple variables contributing to the interindividual variation in adrenocortical stress responses. The results suggest that gender, genetics and nicotine consumption can influence the individual's stress responsiveness to psychological stress while personality traits showed no correlation with cortisol responses to TSST stimulation. From these data we conclude that the TSST can serve as a tool for psychobiological research.

We created the tool below to allow the public to run their own stress tests on the largest banks in America. You can vary the amount of stress that large banks face in this test and see how their financial health (for example, capital buffer) changes. In short, the public will now have the transparency they need to judge the condition of the largest banks.

Our projections for these impacts are based on the publicly reported data available in the standard regulatory reports filed by the banks, as are all of the items included in the stress test tool. The framework we use to model gains and losses on AFS securities is similar in spirit to what occurs in the official DFAST exercises. However, we do not have access to the detailed security level data used in those tests and our projections are therefore far simpler. Importantly, we are not taking into account any valuation changes that occur for reasons other than interest rate movements, nor are we controlling for interest-rate hedges or credit losses.

The true measure of an application isn't how well it handles a slow, ordinary day, but how it performs under pressure. Ensuring that your solution can tolerate stress and still succeed is important to creating an application or hardware device with staying power.

The onus is on developers and quality assurance teams to ensure that these applications can withstand the high pressures of real-world usage. This is where the critical practice of stress testing comes into play, serving as an invaluable tool in the software development arsenal.

Recent studies have underscored the paramount importance of stress testing, highlighting the tangible risks and potential financial implications of neglecting this crucial step. A comprehensive report by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) estimated that inadequate software testing costs the U.S. economy between $22.2 to $59.5 billion annually. A significant portion of these costs could be mitigated through proper stress testing, which ensures that software can handle peak loads and perform optimally under stress, preventing costly downtimes and system failures.

The reality is stark: software failures have led to a 45% loss in market capitalization for affected companies within a period of 180 days, according to a study conducted by Tricentis. This data point highlights the direct correlation between software performance, company reputation, and financial stability. By investing in comprehensive stress testing practices, businesses can not only safeguard their software from unexpected failures but also protect their bottom line and uphold their market standing.

In this article, I've done some digging and found the best stress testing software available on the market today. Below you'll find the details of what each platform has to offer, some information on my selection process, and the answers to the most common questions about stress testing software.

Different types of stress testing software exist, covering a range of operating systems and hardware components, including CPU cores, graphics cards, and RAM. Testers have the ability to simulate thousands, or even millions, of users to exercise the resources on their network beyond normal operating points.

PCMark 10 is benchmarking software with tests for everyday tasks performed in the workplace. It includes tests for daily activities, like web browsing and video conferencing. Users can also run more demanding graphics and physics tests focused on GPU and CPU performance. PCMark produces a score after each benchmark run, allowing testers to compare multiple systems.

GPU-Z is a free tool for Windows computers that displays detailed information about your GPU. A light GPU stress test is also available, enabling users to simulate a slight 3D load on their system. GPU-Z is compatible with Intel, NVIDIA, and AMD graphics cards, including the AMD Radeon and NVIDIA GeForce series.
