The PxHlpa64.sys file is part of the PxEngine library, used by Roxio products for burning optical discs. The PxEngine is also licensed by various 3rd-party software developers specializing in disc burning software.

If you do not use any of our products, then you might have a 3rd-party burning software installed, such as the Panasonic HD Writer AE or PHOTOfunSTUDIO PE. Both of these software have disc burning capability and are usually bundled with Panasonic cameras. They are known to use the PxEngine library files. So if you have either (or both) of these software, uninstall them.

However that still begs the question why this sort of thing is even possible in MacOS and is Apple doing anything to prevent companies from doing this in the future. It is really slimy and disgusting behavior from such an old and well known company that has been making software for Apple products as long as I can remember (back into the 1980s I think). I had never even opened the application after installing it. It's an egregious breach of trust and it shouldn't be possible in any MacOS.

This one isn't bad, but the very first one I saw was a push to purchase Painter, or something. I thought, "Really? Okay, where can I turn this off?" Didn't take long to find it in the settings. But it just plain shouldn't be there. Not even to hawk their own products. Had I not been able to turn it off, I would have demanded a refund.

According to vulnerability research firm Core Security, when opening a media file associated with one of the vulnerable Corel products, the product will also load a specifically named DLL (Dynamic Link Library) file into memory if it's located in the same directory as the opened media file.

The vulnerable products are CorelDRAW X7, Corel Photo-Paint X7, Corel PaintShop Pro X7, CorelCAD 2014, Corel Painter 2015, Corel PDF Fusion, Corel VideoStudio PRO X7 and Corel FastFlick, the Core Security researchers said in an advisory published Monday. Other versions might be affected too, but they haven't been checked, they said.

"Corel is reviewing its products on a case-by-case basis to safeguard dynamic loading of DLL files, which is a common vulnerability in many Windows applications," said Jessica Gould, senior communications manager for Corel, in an emailed statement Tuesday. "Corel makes frequent updates to our applications and these changes have been made a priority for the next update of any affected Corel product. We would like to assure our users that we are not aware of any exploits of this issue with our software."

Corel was founded by Michael Cowpland in 1985 as a research laboratory. Michael Cowpland was CEO of Mitel. Mitel needed writing and creative design programs to enhance the company product line. Corel products were born. Additional products were added. The company had great success early in the high-tech boom of the 1990s and early 2000s with the product CorelDRAW, and became, for a time, the biggest software company in Canada. In 1996, it acquired Novell WordPerfect and started competing with the thought of being "Pepsi to Microsoft's Coke"[4] as Microsoft Word was the top-used word processing software at the time. Corel was in a difficult position as Microsoft pushed pre-loaded copies of its software onto new computers. This mainly consisted of Microsoft Works office applications, but a variant called Works Suite also bundled the Microsoft Word software.

In January 2012, Corel acquired Roxio from Rovi Corporation for an undisclosed amount.[16] Subsequently, on July 2, 2012, Corel announced its acquisition of Pinnacle Systems, a developer of consumer-oriented video editing products (such as the Pinnacle Studio series) owned by Avid.[17]

Having suffered layoffs in 2003 and 2008,[18] Corel began a near yearly culture of restructuring beginning in 2010, when in the latter part of that year the company's finance department was restructured and moved to their Taipei office, resulting in significant layoffs at its Ottawa HQ. Restructuring in 2012[19] resulted in more layoffs. In December 2013, the company's restructuring resulted in the layoffs of the Taipei locations engineering and quality assurance team. Corel's Taipei office was the core development centre of PaintShop Pro and VideoStudio, one of the company's most well-known photo- and video-editing bundles. The 2013 restructuring led to a partial handover of product development to outsourced companies, resulting in more rapid, low-cost development across its product lines. The company continued with layoffs in 2014 and once again at the beginning of 2015 with the change of the company's CEO to Patrick Nichols, previously the head of Corel's WinZip business unit.

Pinnacle Studio 26 focuses largely on product stability and core feature performance, along with dozens of crash and bug fixes for targeted improvements to more than 200 unique user-identified scenarios. Pinnacle Studio 26 is our most reliable and stable version to date. Enjoy smooth and streamlined video editing from the moment you install it!

Hopefully the stability issue will finally have been addressed. I upgraded to version 25 but its performance was worse than 24. It showed few improvements over 24 that I needed but its performance was so unreliable and sluggish, for the first time since using Pinnacle I had to uninstall it and ask for a refund. At least with Coral unlike many software vendors, they do give a 30 day money back guarantee which is why I like Coral products. They also honour that hassle free.
So I decided when the offer of a reasonably priced upgrade that promised to address these issues came I thought even in these times of constraints on budget that I would go for it. Lets hope the improvements do work as promised. 25 really was awful and maybe other folk found the same thing which is why this issue has been given prominence in this latest upgrade.
Its a strange thing, but its often said that software upgrades alternate between really great ones and awful one. I suppose the biggest example is MS Windows which has proved this right from almost the beginning.

In contrast, Corel has kept VideoStudio Pro X7 as a simple stand-alone video editing tool, focused on its core audience. From novice consumers that need quick and easy editing to create nice-looking results, to multimedia enthusiasts that may have multiple cameras and want creative flexibility. VideoStudio Pro X7 also targets additional markets with some of its more distinctive features, including action videographers, who can use image correction, and slow-motion/time-lapse effects, and educators, who can take advantage of screen capture, stop motion, and chromakey.

The core VideoStudio Pro X7 product includes the main application, plus two additional tools: FastFlick for template-based videos and screen capture for recording demonstrations and tutorials. The product also includes built-in NewBlueFX effects and SmartSound for soundtrack generation.

Both Dr. Michael Cowpland and Robert Frankenberg, the chief executive officers of Corel andNovell respectively, see new opportunities arising from the partnering of their technologies thatwill ultimately enhance their core businesses. "We think that the public will be excited by the newpotential of the WordPerfect products as they are combined with the graphics and multimediastrengths of Corel," said Dr. Michael Cowpland. The agreement brings several key benefits to Corel and its customers.
