I read the novel back in the late 90s and loved it. It's one of those books you never forget, it stays with you. I was aware of the film when it came out but haven't managed to track it down until now and actually get it watched... I should have tried harder.
Visually outstanding, structurally quite breathtaking, faithful to and respectful of the source material and most importantly, incredibly moving... perhaps even more so than the book.
Strong performances across the board but the standouts for me would have to be Max Von Sydow, Richard Jenkins and Ethan Hawke. One of Von Sydow's very best here, as far as I'm concerned.
