but that puts you into the next level of cost (which admittedly is relatively low) and it also increased your security exposure if you are really just noting who did what...Is there something I don't understand?

I fully agree with Rushabh on this the cost of erpnext is really low for anyone to really think about in terms of users since the system is not based on user based licence and I would also recommend that every user get their own userid.
By the way, I would like to ask François de Ryckel that how is he assigning the tasks to employees who don't have a userid and how come you could track the same.
What would be the point of assigning a task to employees when they cannot see the same?
I am presuming that you are not using the userids on the shared basis since no userid can work with multiple logins in the system.
