WheneverI extract an archive using 7-Zip, it performs a two step operation. First it extracts the contents of the archives to a temporary folder, then Windows copies the files from the temporary folder to the target directory.

The second part of this operation can take some time, especially if there were a large number of small files in the archive. It seems like the operation could be sped up if 7-Zip just extracted the files directly to the target directory to start with. Is there a way to make it do this?

7-Zip doesn't know folder path of drop target. Only Windows Explorer knows exact drop target. And Windows Explorer needs files (drag source) as decompressed files on disk. So 7-Zip extracts files from archive to temp folder and then 7-Zip notifies Windows Explorer about paths of these temp files. Then Windows Explorer copies these files to drop target folder.

You can press F9 inside 7-Zip, you'll get two panes. In the first you navigate to the archive you want to extract, and in the second you navigate to the folder where you want your files extracted. This will skip the temp folder step.

I can confirm each "solution" here (having tested with 32 and 64 bit variants) and I would like to add something:Drag and Drop is ALWAYS a two step solution when moving between applications, there's just no way around that even with apps inside the same development ecosystem like Microsoft or Adobe titles. The reason won't surprise you.Different applications don't talk to each other directly when moving files between them by drag and drop. This functionality is handled by the OS, no matter which OS you are using. On Windows, FileExplorer will take over from App-A (which is sending), and get a link to the file it is using--if a file does not exist yet, you will get the chance to save a file in some apps, others create a temporary file in a space you specify or use the system temp cache--; this link will then be used by App-B (which is receiving).A compressed archive is only a collection of bits that need to be unscrambled and decompressed into the file(s) the archive contains. When you drag and drop from the 7zip to a FileExplorer window, those files must first be decompressed to a temporary location as they don't yet exist, then they can be moved. This is because 7zip DOES NOT EXTEND the FileExplorer, it is a separate application. However, drag and drop between 2 windows of 7zip will not require this temporary space, it can do it all directly in memory. The same function is found by using the EXTRACT function and giving it a path to dump the files into. However, you should not MOVE or COPY if you wish to avoid temp-caching. Again, these create a temporary working copy, then move that to the path you give them. You can still select single or multiple items of varying type and size, then Extract them, or drag-and-drop into another 7zip window.

Hello everyone; I'm having trouble with 7-zip. When I try to open ANY folder with 7-zip or even 7-zip manager itself, it pops up in the taskbar, and I can even hover over it, but It just won't open the interface. I can still use every function of 7-zip that doesn't require me to open the windows, like extracting files, compressing, etc. But it just won't open the windows, so I can't even look at files that are compressed by 7zip without having to extract them first. It's really annoying.

For me 7-zip is blocked by group policy (which I can not control) and I want to find a full exe that doesn't extract using 7zip. Several posts already here suggest going to to get the full download but at least the English US version for windows is NOT a "full" exe version. When I run as administrator or not it starts the extracting window and when it is almost complete I see the message 7-Zip This program is blocked by group policy. For more information, contact your system administrator.

If you aren't able to open the file in an archive manager that recognizes this format to extract all file/folder then you would need a ZIP archive version as is available for developer versions to avoid running the 7-ZIP extraction code.

Does your IT know about this problem and have any suggestions? There must be a lot of open source software that uses the 7zSD "self extracting executable" (SFX) utility. Maybe they don't like open source software. ;-)

In theory you can download and save the installer file on another computer and use the 7-Zip archive manager to extract all the files and folders to an USB stick. Then you can install (copy) these file on the other computer and possibly run the maintenance service installer manually if you are allowed to install this service as it requires administrator permission.

As an IT organization we do not support FireFox. Why? 1) The FireFox installation is packaged in a self-extracting archive (Which we block for security purposes) - in order to prevent the transmission of malicious programs. see disadvantages on: -extracting_archive

Hi EsterlineIT, if you want to, you can find solutions to these issues. Numerous companies deploy and manage Firefox using tools other than group policy. You could start by joining the mailing list described on this page:

Just an FYI for people if this does not work for you I tried version 44 (the current version at the time of this post) and extracting it did not work. I notice that It did not have the Core folder and setup, but only the Setup. So went and found an older version, I used version 36 and when i extract that it had both files as described above and I could then install Firefox i just had to run a few updates. I don't know what version things changed but i know version 44 will not work and version 36 will.

I just created a 7-zip archive here with an older tool, added password, and wrote out the 7z file to my Desktop. I right-clicked on this file, chose Open with, and using TheUnarchiver, was able to supply the password and extract the content correctly. On OS X El Capitan 10.11.6.

The error message implies it is using a (presumed) newer variant of .7z than the Mac tools you have tried support. I encountered a similar issue with a .rar file recently which was in the new version 5 RAR format.

Whilst there are at least two tools that I know now support v5 of RAR on a Mac I do not what format/version your file is in and whether any Mac tools support it. You can see information about the .7z format here -zip.org/7z.html

The same website lists various .7z tools that either they provide or recommend. The only Mac tool listed for .7z files is Keka which is what I have myself used in the past. The current version of Keka is 1.0.9 but there is a Keka 1.1.0beta which you could also try. See

Most compression tools and formats actually have multiple different compression schemes they can use although most of the time these choices are hidden and unnecessary. Zip has multiple variants, RAR has and so does .7z, if you look at the first webpage I linked to i.e. the .7z website you can see it lists at least seven different versions it can do. When you created a new test file and then successfully opened it you will have created it using a variant your tool understood, the problem here seems to be it has been created with a more esoteric or newer variant than the Mac tools you have tried understand.

Yes working with a windows pc and using 7zip v.9.20, so very old (actual we have 16.X-whatever), works without problems. So I'm not really sure if this zip archive is made with a very new crazy option. Because my old version of 7zip would also not be able to unzip it.

Yes, Joh I know. This was also the first tool tried, without success. The person which sends me the file is not available. But the company which he is working uses normally 7zip. Also you have the ability to create zip archives with 7zip, you only have to select it during creation procedure.

A common mistake by Windows users is putting the wrong file extension on files. If they used 7zip to create a ZIP file but used the .7z file extension this would confuse other more law abiding tools and equally possible would be the reverse of them having used 7zip to create a .7z file but using the .zip file extension.

Is it normal for drivers from Gigabyte to install 7z? I got a notice while installing drivers from the Gigabyte site that 7z installation may have failed. I was installing the audio drivers and network drivers from their site. I found this suspicious but admit I am not a normal windows user and have been on Linux since windows 98. Something about this screamed malware.

typically the download is a zip file.

if you dont already have winzip, winrar or 7zip. download and install one of em to handle your archives.

and no ive never had a gigabyte download try to install secondary software like 7zip before allowing a driver download. (gigabyte user for over 8 years)

well ive looked at the website, the download link html the downloaded zip.

its not redirecting to download anything else. (the code for the button is transparent and goes straight to the file download, no extra code to do anything else.)

so im guessing your issue is somewhere else.

Drivers from AMD and Realtek seemed to work fine without the weirdness I got from the Gigabyte site. Except windows updates gripping that I need to install Realtek and AMD drivers. However windows also says I have the newest drivers for the same requirements. LOL this is some funny shit.

Anyhow It is what it is and all seems to work now including 5.1 audio and power profiles.

py7zr supports algorithms and filters which lzma module and liblzma support, and supports BZip2 and Deflate that are implemented in python core libraries,It also supports ZStandard, Brotli and PPMd with third party libraries.

A feature handling symbolic link is basically compatible with p7zip implementation, but not work with original 7-zip because the original does not implement the feature.py7zr try checking symbolic links strictly and raise ValueError when bad link is requested, but it does not guarantee to block all the bad cases.ZStandard and Brotli is not default methods of 7-zip, so these archives are considerednot to be compatible with original 7-zip on windows/p7zip on linux/mac.Enhanced Deflate is also known as DEFLATE64 TM that is a registered trademark of PKWARE, Inc.Enhanced Deflate is tested only on CPython. It is disabled on PyPy.Not supported algorithmsBCJ2 (Standard lzma module does not provide).InstallYou can install py7zr as usual other libraries using pip.
