Steam downloads at 15MB/s when connected to the router but goes up to 70MB/s when its connected straight to my modem without the router. My internet speed is 600mbps from Xfinity. My PC does not have a wifi chip, but speeds on my iPhone and laptops are fine.

Sometimes though you might find that Steam just isn't downloading fast enough. This could be down to Steam's servers but it could also be something simple causing a download slowdown. There are numerous things you can do fix this though, so we're here to help you with simple tips and tricks worth trying.

why are my download speeds so slow on steam

The first logical thing to do if you have issues with Steam download speeds is to check Steam's download settings. Some simple settings in here might be holding you back, but with a few quick changes, you can increase your download speeds and reduce your misery.

You may also choose to allow downloads during gameplay and unticking "throttle downloads while streaming" if you not using Steam Remote Play. Tweaking these settings may help improve your Steam download speeds but there are other ones to check too.

Steam has a built-in cache to help with downloads. Although this tool can help with the download process sometimes it can also cause problems, so if you're suffering from slow Steam downloads then it might be worth trying to clear this cache.

Aside from Steam itself having causing issues with downloads it might well be that there are other things throttling your speeds. This includes other things on your network but also apps on your gaming PC.

@DainisLV @Kotala It's not ideal - but I mutually block all traffic between peers that I know are on the same LAN. This forces the traffic to use the physical LAN connection instead of the Hamachi VPN connection. It means the peers on the same LAN always appear as "red" to each other, but it gets around the slow traffic between machines.

Before installing Hamachi my internet speeds are showing 200Mb/s. After installing it I constantly get 60Mb/s. I have uninstalled Hamachi but nothing changes, is there a setting somewhere that can resolve this?

Hello, everyone. I've just installed steam, but downloading speed is really slow. I'm pretty sure that it's some kind of software problem. I've already tried setting up dnsmasq, and it seem to work. But it didn't solved my problem

Was downloading yesterday with slow speed. VPNing to USA, disabling qos and adding text to the shortcut didnt help. Decided to leave it overnight. Once I closed most other programs(vpn, steam, ea app, gog, skype, telegram, discord, chrome) the speed went to its proper values and the download went smoothly afterwards.

Ok nevermind I worked it out, I didn't add the space before pasting it after the target line.
It has increased the speed but is only 600kb/s... Far from the speeds my 1 gig connection should be achieving.

Hi, I don't understand why I'm having such a big problem downloading a movie from my Dropbox file onto my MacbookPro laptop. The file is only 1.2GB, I'm connected to my router with an ethernet cable, with a fibre-optic connection of 50/50Mbps uncapped and unthrottled. I've tried many times already, but the download is either ridiculously slow or stops altogether. I'm on Dropbox Pro, I have plenty space on my laptop hard drive, and I'm not doing anything else on the laptop at the same time. Am i doing this incorrectly or what? Help help please!

Dropbox will never use the complete full download bandwidth. It also is affected by you using other things, like mail, web etc during those times Dropbox may slow the process to allow you to continue working. It could be affected by things like you allowing the computer to sleep.

I have been having exactly the same problem! I too am on a MBP with over 250GB free (started with over 400GB) last night. I am on a cable network with d/l consistently over 115mbps and with the dropbox icon showing 9627KB/sec, 27 mins left (it said only 1 hour left 6 hours ago), and yet this has been downloading for more than 12 hours now! I realize my download is much larger, but even so, there is no reason that anyone's downloads should take 12 hours with speeds such as these! Dropbox is throttling us even though we subscribe to DBPro! Uploading to DB doesn't even take a quarter of the time it does to download!

Hi, past two weeks I am experiencing extremely low download speeds from dropbox. I work together with a photographer who has a DB pro subscription for years and suddenly the files from his dropbox take hours to download or even days when its videoclips bigger than 500MB.

I have cleared the cash
and no antivirus or firewall has it blocked
this is the only game I have that does this
literally, normal downloads for everything else including steam have no issues and go super fast

Can you test your download speeds to Amazon CloudFront? Your connection could be having issues with AWS.

I had noticed since I got Epic Games Launchers that the downloads seemed much slower than they should. It would average about 1/3rd of my internet bandwidth witch on Centurylink is only 12Mbits/s / 3 = 4Mbits/s. I did some research on the forums, and found a partial fix.

Who knows, maybe tomorrow I can try the editor if it has finished installing, but at this rate I should probably not expect it to be done by then. I have installed several versions of Unity and I figured it seemed pretty slow for it to take 1-2 hours to install the engine, but now that seems like a luxury compared to this.

I am getting slow download speeds on both wired and wifi connections with my new eero 6 Pro setup. On wired ethernet I can get about 400mbps, on wifi about 200mbps. I have gigabit internet with Xfinity BTW. The Internet connection from my router on the eero app shows it delivering 960mbps down. Upload is fine at about 30mbps. Honestly I was expecting a bit more from this product. I see this is a problem in several other discussions but not seeing any suggested fixes, and all kinds of conflicting opinions about what I should expect. If this was normal then why are some users reporting no issues with wired connection while others are having issues?

The eero 6 Pro can push up to 1 gig speeds over WiFi. But this requires optimal setup with minimal interference. Make sure that if you are running multiple eeros that they are at least 35-45ft away from each other. Also review the placement article below to make sure that your eeros are placed optimally.

2) Do you know if your eero is in a double NAT? If so, it is possible that the upstream router is limiting the speeds you are able to pull through the eero. You can try and put the eero into the upstream routers DMZ or see if you can bridge the upstream router.

James I purchased an eero 2 pack from Best Buy, with 2 routers, I swapped between each router resetting my network both times.. I get the same speed on both routers about 450mbps wired to ethernet, I am getting wifi speeds about the same now as long as I am close to the router. Still not getting close to gig speeds wired or wifi. Next?

Alright, at this point you're going to want to give our support a call so we can gather more information and review your network to continue troubleshooting. A wired eero Pro 6 should be pushing close to the 1 gig speeds you are seeing on the speed test and we need to take a closer look to find what the cause is for this limited speed. I have shared an article below that will help you identify the best number to call or if you wanted to email our support you can email sup...@eero.com.

Thank you for reaching out to us and welcome to the Community! I understand that it can be frustrating when a product is not working as desired but lets start some troubleshooting to try and identify what the cause of the slower speeds might be.

It sounds like the problem might have been the ethernet cords or possibly problems with the ethernet ports. With the limited speed of 80Mbps that you mentioned the first thing that comes to my mind is that some of the ethernet cords might only be rated for up to 100Mbps. If the ethernet connecting the eeros up was limiting the speed then WiFi speeds would also be limited.

Yeah it sounds like that is a possibility. Generally when I see speeds limited like this on an eero network it is the ethernet cable or something upstream to the eero network is the cause when it comes to testing speeds that are wired. When the ISP tech does show up ask them to double check your ethernet cords as well. They should have a tool that lets them check the possible speeds on the ethernet cords.

When my input comes straight from the ISP into Eero, my Eero Pro 6 slows down the wired connections coming out of it, aside from anything it's doing with wireless. A lot...meaning a 33% to 50% reduction.

Val33 Exactly. The eero pro 6 wired output works fine with an ordinary DHCP feed but the new PPPoE implementation slows it down, a lot. This problem has nothing to do with wireless and cabling is not the issue. Hoping a firmware fix resolves it.

In short, the client is very aggressive on its DNS requests, which normally causes it to be throttled by servers, leading to really slow downloads. However, using dnsmasq allows the requests to be cached locally and offload the requests.

I recently bought a new TP-Link Archer C6 AC1200 Wireless MU-MIMO Gigabit Router for my new 100 Mbps connection. I'm getting great speed over wifi @ 5GHz mode. But when my PC is connected to the router using ethernet. For some wierd reason my download speed is very slow but my upload speed is alright.

I wanted to make sure that my ISP has no issues. So I even tested the speed results from my old TL-WR841N V11 router. Using my old router I got a good speed for both download and upload speeds.
