NASCAR Rumble is a racing video game created by Electronic Arts for the PlayStation. Players race through 18 different courses set in six different areas collecting powerups to aid them. The game is a departure from many NASCAR games, as it is an arcade racer featuring various tracks and Mario Kart-esque powerups. A non-NASCAR licensed sequel was made for the PlayStation 2, called Rumble Racing. There are drivers from the then Winston Cup Series and Craftsman Truck Series, as well as legend racers and fictional trucks.
The game received favorable reviews according to the review aggregation website GameRankings.[2] Eric Bratcher of NextGen said of the game, "Don't expect an ultra-realistic racing simulation here. It's more like the NASCAR-licensed version of Road Rash. And it's great."[12]
Dan Elektro of GamePro said of the game in one review, "Yes, it's closer to Hot Wheels Turbo Racing than NASCAR 2000, but no matter. NASCAR Rumble's silly spin on the usual stock car showdown is a wild and welcome shift into high gear."[14][c] In another GamePro review, however, Scary Larry said, "In the long list of impressive PlayStation racing games, NASCAR Rumble is definitely in the funny car competition."[15][d]
I've never quite gotten the hype around Crash Bandicoot's Wumpa League. Crash Bandicoot was the very first video game I ever played, and I've stuck with the madcap marsupial through all of his ups and downs. While I'm often critical of remakes and remasters as safe cash grabs over an attempt at something new, I allowed Crash to grab my cash with both the N. Sanity Trilogy and Nitro Fueled. Crash Bandicoot 4 felt like a justification for that, but then things were all quiet on the wumpa front. There were long-held rumours that the next game was a battle royale of sorts named Wumpa League, but it always seemed to be whispers in the aether. The Game Awards finally confirmed the game's existence (though it will now be called Crash Team Rumble) via a live-action Crash Bandicoot crashing the stage, and now that it's here I'm more convinced than ever that I don't really want it.
But the truth is I didn't want it in the first place. It was preferable to the studios making gun textures, sure, but the natural step after Crash 4 was Crash 5. The fourth instalment was a little wayward with its level sizing and tried way too hard to cater to the top five percent of completionists, but it was a top five mainline Crash game. That's a great starting point. Wumpa League is a swing in the opposite direction. Nitro Fueled's success seems to have convinced Activision (who has resurrected Toys for Bob for the occasion) that online multiplayer can be successful for Crash, and can therefore be monetised. But if the choice then was to make a new kart racer, I'd have far fewer complaints. Crash's racing games are a well-established series in their own right. Wumpa League/Rumble isn't really anything.
