To get started, you will first need to have a licence to install Windows 10. You can then download and run the media creation tool. For more information on how to use the tool, see the instructions below.

If you are installing Windows 10 on a PC running Windows XP or Windows Vista, or if you need to create installation media to install Windows 10 on a different PC, see Using the tool to create installation media (USB flash drive, DVD, or ISO file) to install Windows 10 on a different PC section below.

Note: Before you install Windows 10, check to make sure your PC meets the system requirements for Windows 10. We also recommend going to the PC manufacturer's website for any additional info about updated drivers and hardware compatibility.

If you have Office 2010 or earlier and choose to perform a clean install of Windows 10, you will need to locate your Office product key. For tips on locating your product key, check Find your Office 2010 product key or Enter the product key for your Office 2007 program.

If your PC does not automatically boot to the USB or DVD media, you might have to open a boot menu or change the boot order in your PC's BIOS or UEFI settings. To open a boot menu or change the boot order, you'll typically need to press a key (such as F2, F12, Delete, or Esc) immediately after you turn on your PC. For instructions on accessing the boot menu or changing the boot order for your PC, check the documentation that came with your PC or go to the manufacturer's website. If you do not see the USB or DVD media device listed within the boot options, you may need to reach out to the PC manufacturer for instructions for temporarily disabling Secure Boot in your BIOS settings.

If changing the boot menu or order doesn't work, and your PC immediately boots into the OS you want to replace, it is possible the PC had not fully shut down. To ensure the PC fully shuts down, select the power button on the sign-in screen or on the Start menu and select Shut down.

If you downloaded an ISO file for Windows 10, the file is saved locally at the location you selected. If you have a third-party DVD burning program installed on your computer that you prefer to use for creating the installation DVD, that program might open by going to the location where the file is saved and double-clicking the ISO file, or right-click the ISO file, select Open with and choose your preferred DVD burning software.

If you want to use the Windows Disk Image Burner to create an installation DVD, go to the location where the ISO file is saved. Right-click the ISO file and select Properties. On the General tab, click Change and select Windows Explorer for the program you would like to use to open ISO files and select Apply. Then right-click the ISO file and select Burn disc image.

If you want to install Windows 10 directly from the ISO file without using a DVD or flash drive, you can do so by mounting the ISO file. This will perform an upgrade of your current operating system to Windows 10.

Use this option and download Media Creation Tool if you want to create bootable USB media to perform a clean install on new or existing hardware. To get started you first need a license to install Windows 11 or have a Windows 10 device that qualifies for an upgrade to Windows 11.

To get started, you will first need to have a license to install Windows 11. You can then download and run the media creation tool. For more information on how to use the tool, see the instructions below.

Have a new XG85 installed with defaults and all traffic allowed out. Before the new firewall was installed Windows 10 media creation tool ran fine. Now it give an error 0x80200013 - 0x90017 on 3 different machines.

When I insert a USB stick into my PC i get a pop up saying new device detected. When I try to create a media creation tool using the MS app, the process starts then i believe when it tries to write to the usb drive fails. just has and error cannot create on your computer or something close to that. So I assume it's BD. How can i turn off BD scanning or doing anything with my USB

What a horrible "solution." I'm sure most tech-savvy users simply have "Scan flash drives" disabled because of the lack of useful options. I wouldn't mind Bitdefender scanning my flash drives, as I do occasionally use them in other systems. But since the options can't be changed, i.e., I can't create exclusions or just have the app WARN ME about a PUP or other detection on the flash drive, then the entire flash drive scanning feature is worthless. I'm IT, so I have some powerful anti-virus tools on the flash drive and port-scanning apps, etc. The last thing I want your AV software to do is arbitrarily delete my files that are on the drive for a reason.

I've been trying all kinds of alternatives like system restore, uninstall updates and now also MS Media Creation Tool and all to no avail. I get a blue screen that says automatic repair failed and then gives me the options for "Continue, Troubleshoot, Use a Device" etc but all end these options end up with the same result. Namely, Your PC ran into problems and needs to restart and it collecting who knows what. And then, it's back to automatic repair and the circle continues.

I have not tried RUFUS but I would like to clarify that either using the USB Media Tool or the "Download from the Cloud" option all end up with the same result. The PC downloads and installs the software but then after it says it's now done and does a reboot, we have the same issue all over. So, I dont think it's an install issue but something else but what?

some users created the bootable Windows 10 installation usb incorrectly. They copy/paste the official Windows 10.iso on the USB (bootable or not bootable). Not saying this is you, but in case you did that, it would not work. That is not the correct way.

Follow official Microsoft Windows 10 installation media creation guide to prepare a bootable usb. If you have done that, make sure your pc bios boots from usb storage device as the first one, or press F12 to select the usb as boot device. It should proceed to installation then. It had worked 100% for me numerous times. No trick needed as long as usb was prepared correctly.

@sabebbi From your initial post it appears you wish to do a fresh install of Windows and not do a repair, but it seems that what you are describing as happening is a repair. Perhaps you should download a utility to reinitialize your boot drive and then try the fresh install.

The issue is 2 fold. USB device may be faulty. Using USB 2.0 FAT32 SDCZ60-032G-A46 works 100 percent of the time without issue. The drive may be bad so I would recommend a new hard drive and removing the old drive. Recover data on a dock.

Unfortunately, this PC that is causing trouble is not in my hot little hands but about 700 miles north of here. So, with that and a different time zone, it makes it a bit more difficult to fix but I hope to get there and get this Dell XPS 8930 up and running soon again.

Well, we tried the install/re-install with RUFUS but same result. BTW, I also disabled secure boot in the UEFI settings per the Rufus instructions. So, still same problem. And yes, the flash drive is working. We actually tried 2 different flash drives, same result. Always going back to "PC ran into problems" and then the various options. If helpful, I can upload screen shots.

If I use the Windows 10 upgrade tool or the Media Creation tool, I always get an error that coincides with an issue downloading the data. If I put a machine's IP address into the BYPASS list, these tools work great. I'd rather not mess with bypass lists because you can forget an IP is in there, plus its messy and unwieldy to maintain. I'd rather put the appropriate URL's in to allow this tool to work.

So I used PUTTY and logged into our S170 and did grep, access logs and put in the IP address of my test machine. I had Putty log all output to a text file and then run the Media Creation tool to download a Windows 10 ISO file. I then opened this putty.log in Notepad++ and found all occurrences of denied. I tried putting some Regex's into our allowed domains whitelist (Custom URL Categories) but its still blocking.

I'll see if this forum lets me attach the whole putty log but if you have any ideas before I open a ticket with Cisco, please let me know what you did to allow this tool to download Windows 10 iso (or usb stick image or in place pc upgrade).

Ok that is an interesting way to go about setting it up. I configured that new authentication policy to not do any type of authorization, and the identity is flagged on a URL list with these in. However I am still getting blocked and when I check the blocked transaction in the UI, it seems to be on with Block - Policy as the disposition. There are some ocasional download.windowsupdate.com in there as well but with .windowsupdate.com in the URL list why wouldn't this be allowed?

Ah ok I see it is currently disabled. I am a little cautious to enable it if AMP and Virus scanning is going to have a harder time finding malware and virus signatures. I don't get why this has to be a global option. If I had my way I would turn it on for the Microsoft Updates Identity but leave it off for everything else.

I got the ISO file I needed by allowing the direct link to the Windows 10 .ESD file that I found the Media Creation Tool was trying to pull via google chrome. Googling how to convert an ESD file to ISO file lead me to an article along with download links to a tool that does this.

I'll experiment with this just to see if it makes a difference, but I'll likely put it back to disabled to stay secure. I don't know if anyone from Cisco is reading this forums, but guys... you really should be putting this checkbox under each identity for more granular control. This all or nothing approach just does not work.

EDIT: Thats what it was Ken. You are a valuable asset to this community! You've helped me in the past on various posts and I can't thank you enough. The Media creation tool is actually working now. I am cautious about leaving this on however because security is very important to the team. Again I just can't believe Cisco would make this an all or nothing setting. That does not seem to be the right direction for this feature. I will inquire TAC about if that can be changed before leaving Cisco WSA for an alternate solution in the 2018 budget year. If they don't change it, they dug their grave.
