Ramana Maharishi's Self-Inquiry method says that the reason that
people think is that they think there is an "I" which has to survive.

... all thoughts, all worries, etc stem from the first thought: "I am
this body"

But I'm not so sure about that. If I put my mind on a word and then
let the mind run, it just does it's file-cabinet search job. Perhaps
if my will thinks "I am this body" it will direct the mind to think in
ways that are pro-survival for this body.

So the real problem with survival-oriented thinking starts in the Will
of Me, not in the Mind, which is just an associative file-cabinet.
