On Tuesday, four Latinx IU Bloomington students shared their stories and advice with the Amigos Culture Club, a club at Bloomington High School North that is open to all students. They talked, in English and Spanish, about their paths to higher education, and spent most of the time answering questions from North students on such topics as scholarships, financial aid, college applications and finding places at a school where they feel a sense of belonging.
La Casa/Latino Cultural Center at IU provides programming, support and opportunities for Latino students, as well as assistance with academics, leadership skills and professional and social development. The Amigos Culture Club works closely with La Casa and the city of Bloomington, said Elizabeth Sweeney, North teacher and Amigos adviser. The club has a number of events scheduled in honor of Hispanic Heritage Month, which is Sept. 15 to Oct. 15.
Some students know what they want to do when coming into college, said Lillian Casillas, La Casa/Latino Cultural Center director. But it's OK to not know as a high schooler and it's OK to change paths at college, she said.
IU student Erick Patino encouraged the high schoolers to make taking care of themselves the No. 1 goal. Without doing that, quickly burning out could happen easily, he said. Stay positive and follow your dreams, Garcia said.
