to ERMes
Hey folks,
I am the serials manager at Gustavus. Anna Hulseberg and I (together
with our acquisitions coordinator) have begun using ERMes and it's
going really well. I'm wondering if others have thought about using
ERMes to manage print and/or online journals? Outside of our ILS, I
rely on ebsconet for managing print and online journals, in terms of
tracking format, price, publisher info, running reports, etc. Although
we order most of our subscriptions through ebsco, there are a handful
that we order directly from the publisher or are faculty gifts.
Unfortunately, our ILS (Aleph) is not able to pull the type of reports
I need - reports that ebsconet offers.

I'm caught between 2 systems and am considering using ERMes as another
option for journal management. Anna and I have brainstormed about how
we could use the existing architecture to accommodate journal
information - such as using the database form for publisher info - but
I really would need to have title-level information in ERMes in order
to run queries for statistics and other projects.

Does anyone have any ideas as to how to make ERMes work for journal
management? The way we are using ERMes for journal management is that
we have included journal-specific vendor info, vendor contact info,
and Admin Website access (for activating e-journals and for usage
statistics). But again, I am hoping to include title-specific
information.

Thanks for your time and suggestions.
Best,
Sarah

I heartily agree. I don't have the time to invent it, but I want to use it! We use Wolper for subscription management here at the NSF and they do not provide half as much information as EBSCO. I plan on putting all of our title-by-title purchases into the ERMS as soon as I can figure it out, both print and electronic. If you need input on potential fields for this table, I may be able to help, then again you already have access to EBSCO as an example...

Not sure what I can do for you technically, but count me in.

Sorry to be so late with this conversation. I tried keeping track of journals and found it to be a moving target.  I am sure it would be possible to do using ERMes with a little luck and some time commitment.  We have so many journals here, it seems daunting to attempt to keep them all sorted out between vendors.
Anyway, try linking the journal to vendors through a pull-down menu to your vendor table for easier updating when a vendor might get bought out and all of the journals change vendor en masse.  If stat login information moves with the vendor, then that info will be available for all of your journals if these two tables are kept separate.  Queries can be built to update all of the journals together when there is a mass change.

Good Luck!
Norma
