Along with his gold medals came his famous golden shoes. As sneaker collectors, most of us focus our attention on basketball shoes like the Air Jordan VII or Air More Uptempo when reminiscing about Olympic footwear, but the shoes that have gotten the most widespread attention, by far, from the Olympic Games are Michael Johnson's gold Nike track spikes.
Johnson made a confident statement by donning the golden shoes in his quest for Olympic Gold, and his confidence was justified after crushing the competition as well as records. He had the world talking about not just his feats on the track, but his feet on the track. They made it onto the cover of TIME and I even recall a story on the local news in Indiana about a softball team that had jokingly spray painted their shoes gold, inspired by Michael Johnson.
Other than being gold, the shoes themselves were an achievement in design. Weighing in around a mere 3.5 ounces each, they were the definition of minimalism in a shoe. With a three piece upper (tongue and two sides), no outsole in the rearfoot, and a lightweight carbon graphite spike plate with ceramic aluminum spikes, the golden spikes were almost as light as they could possibly be. Other sprinters were given the opportunity to wear similar spikes in 1996, but none wanted to wear something with as little support as Michael's.
Shonen Bat is some kind of avenging spirit, taking the ugliest wishes of those who call it up, and making them real. Sugi was desperate to have something help her get out from under the pressure, then the golden bat appeared. Bam. Ichi specifically wishes the bat boy to take out Ushi. Bam.
Just over a month ago, Eden set out to upcycle and create gold-painted shoes for colleagues, pediatric patients and their families to wear in honor of the "Go Gold" campaign for Childhood Cancer Awareness Month in September.
"There's a lot that goes into it," she says. "I don't know what the shoes' life was before this, so I wash them a few times and sanitize them, then I put them back together if they need fixing. That can take a while."
By late August, Eden reached her goal and began distributing shoes to anyone who was interested in donning a pair. The word spread quickly, and staff from collaborating departments laced up their gold shoes in September to join the movement.
The RDN is excited to send you out on the Golden Shoe Hunt again in 2023. Explore both regional and community parks in the RDN from April 7th through to the May long weekend. Each week a shoe is hidden and a clue to its location is released. Clues and instructions for the locations of the shoes will be posted weekly starting April 7. Sign up to this page to receive clues directly to your inbox each week!
SIZING INFO: I am a size 6 in shoes so I get a size 36 in Golden Goose and wear a small ped sock. (I love these from Amazon!) I have a narrow foot and they fit perfectly. Golden Goose sneakers run wide so keep that in mind if you are in between sizes! I always tie mine!
I have five pair of GG. I know. Crazy, but they are awesome. Good advice. The GG Ball Stars are by far the best, but the insoles have a built in heal lift, which is strange. Went to CVS, got gel insoles , replaced the GG insoles and poof! The most comfortable shoes on the planet.
