The story of "Fog Hill of Five Elements" takes place in ancient times when demons ravaged the land and people lived in despair. In this dire situation, a mysterious Taoist stepped forward and bestowed the power of gold, wood, water, fire, and earth, the five elements, upon five noble families to resist the demons. These descendants possessing the power of the five elements are known as Elemental Envoys. Together they sealed away the demons within Mount Mist Concealment while imprisoning most powerful creature, Qilin beast within the divine shield.
Apart from these demonic beasts, villagers from Deshan village also set their sights on capturing the little Qilin. They want to refine an immortal pill using holy beast blood in order to enhance their own cultivation levels. Meanwhile, representatives of each of the five elements are also involved in this conflict. Taking on this mission is none other than Wenren Yixuan's younger brother, Wenren Jingxuan.
Wuxing was first translated into English as "the Five Elements", drawing deliberate parallels with the Western idea of the four elements.[10][8] This translation is still in common use among practitioners of Traditional Chinese medicine, such as in the name of Five Element acupuncture.[11] However, this analogy is misleading. The four elements are concerned with form, substance and quantity, whereas wuxing are "primarily concerned with process, change, and quality".[12] For example, the wuxing element "Wood" is more accurately thought of as the "vital essence" of trees rather than the physical substance wood.[13] This led sinologist Nathan Sivin to propose the alternative translation "five phases" in 1987.[14] But "phase" also fails to capture the full meaning of wuxing. In some contexts, the wuxing are indeed associated with physical substances.[15] Historian of Chinese medicine Manfred Porkert proposed the (somewhat unwieldy) term "Evolutive Phase".[15] Perhaps the most widely accepted translation among modern scholars is "the five agents", proposed by Marc Kalinowski.[16]
The art of feng shui (Chinese geomancy) is based on wuxing, with the structure of the cosmos mirroring the five phases, as well as the eight trigrams. Each phase has a complex network of associations with different aspects of nature (see table): colors, seasons and shapes all interact according to the cycles.[17]
Tai chi uses the five elements to designate different directions, positions or footwork patterns: forward, backward, left, right and centre, or three steps forward (attack) and two steps back (retreat).[18]
This holistic, interconnected philosophy can guide us in using the elements to tend to our health. By focusing on each element and its corresponding season, we can see how the five elements can help keep our bodies in better harmony.
Paying attention to one element at a time is a wonderful way to begin noticing their effects. But, ultimately, you should balance all five elements within your body, because they work together in a rich, complex system.
First, America must continue our efforts to improve security at ourborders.Second, we must hold employers to account for the workers they hire, byproviding better tools for them to verify documents and workeligibility.Third, we must create a temporary worker program that takes pressure offthe border by providing foreign workers a legal and orderly way to enterour country to fill jobs that Americans are not doing.Fourth, we must resolve the status of millions of illegal immigrants whoare here already, without amnesty and without animosity. Finally, we must honor the great American tradition of the melting pot.Americans are bound together by our shared ideals, an appreciation ofour history, and an ability to speak and write the English language. And the success of our country depends upon helping newcomers assimilateinto our society and embrace our common identity as Americans.Coming together on a good bill that includes all five elements, we willmake America more secure. We will make our economy more competitive. And we will show the world that America can be a lawful society and awelcoming society at the same time.Reforming our immigration system is an important opportunity to showthat elected officials in Washington can work together to find practicalsolutions to the problems that matter most. I thank the Senators whohave been working hard on this issue. I am optimistic we can pass acomprehensive immigration bill and get this problem solved for theAmerican people this year.Thank you for listening.END Printer-Friendly Version Email this page to a friend
