To create a distributed program/app

I am studying Erlang to create an application like sheepit-renderfarm.com, ... Since I am new I am not able to visualize the whole picture of codings ... Can someone give me the Idea that how much knowledge I have to gain to create such an application ... The app should utilize the free software blender 3d to render the 3d scenes ... Can someone send me the references to gain the sufficient knowledge to create the app ...?
