Hi Andrea,

we don't have regular meetups. The last one was organised by AOL who sponsored Erlang Factory Lite event, but I have no idea when the next one might be.

Regards,
Anton

HI Anton

Cool, thanks for the answer . A few of us were thinking of meeting up for functional katas, ie meet up with developers of different functional languages and solve little problems (that some people call katas) and then see all the solutions in different languages to learn from each other
Do you think this is something interesting that erlang devs would turn up for?

Well Jakub is already interested, let's see if someone else replies. I'm away for a month though.

Awesome, I know a company that would probably sponsor some pizzas, Any ideas for a venue?

+1 for meetup, if possible Mondays or Thursdays.

Hi,

Mondays and Thursdays sound good to me. If possible 1st or 3rd
week of the month. Given a number of IT meetups in Dublin we
need to plan carefully ;-)

I was wondering if Engine Yard would be able to accommodate another IT
group ;-)

Thanks,

/Jakub

Hi all,

AOL would also be prepared to host a meet up pretty much anytime. We're located at HSQ near Heuston Station. We have made a lot of progress with Erlang since adopting it almost two years ago and would love to share our experiences, both good and bad.

Thanks
Diarmuid

Thanks for that, is there any pubs around/do you have beer there? it seems to help people having availability of a drink :D

I'd love to see some kind of general functional programming meetup. I've been using clojure a good bit in the last couple of years and it would be great to hear other peoples experiences with racket/erlang/elixir/haskell etc.

Are there any other groups centered around functional languages in Ireland atm? There's a clojure ireland mailing list at https://groups.google.com/forum/#!forum/clojure-ireland (not very active though). There's this erlang list, and there's a Scala group on meetup. Any others that I'm missing?

Cheers,

Yes, that's why I m suggesting the katas. it would be a nice way to get a general Functional programming Irish meetup,
I could probably sort out having our first meetup in the science gallery and try to find a more suitable venue if that doesn't work, maybe in November so we have time to tell people from other groups about it
What do you think?
I was thinking it would be cool to choose a simple kata in a set time (say an hour?) and then people in different languages show how they solved it, you know like a little retro immediately after so that we start learning from each others languages?

Hi
I am not aware of any other func prog groups in Ireland. The idea of having one meetup group for func langs sounds great.

Yep, +1 to a general purpose functional programming group. Think it would be a great to learn from other languages

Would personally be interested in learning more about Elixir. I only came across it recently

Hi all,

I'm posting this after the first day at "EuroClojure" in Berlin. At least three others from Ireland are at the conference.

I'd be interested in a functional languages group too; especially for Clojure and ClojureScript (which I've used) and Elixir (which I'm learning).

I joined this group a moment ago in order to make this post, having discussed this thread with at least four people at three technology events in the past week. A couple of those people haven't posted here, but did seem interested.

If you want to aim for a broad church, don't forget that Ruby has strong functional features too (although it lacks the immutability of Clojure, Erlang, etc.) JavaScript has Underscore.js (and Lo-Dash) for a functional style! I'm not suggesting that these should be the first topics, only that they're worth keeping in mind for later; when yet-another-Scala-kata becomes too much to bear.

Count me in,

Kevin.

Hi Kevin
Cool, OK let's make this happen
I was thinking the kata is the same and we all solved it our language of choice then do a retrospective (as opposed to prescribing what Language to use)

Anyway, another place I was thinking for a meetup was Wayra, anyone know anyone there?

Hi Andrea,

Regarding AOL if there is still interest, we could host the event providing food/drinks as well (no alcohol :) ) and as per your last question there is a pub at 700m walking distance from our offices.

Thanks,
Thomas

Hi all,

I've recently setup a "Clojure Ireland" group on meetup.com. Kevin mentioned it would be cool to post here to see if people are interested in joining or even merging the Clojure Ireland into a more general "Functional Language" group as discussed here.

Anyone have any thoughts?

Hi,

This is my first e-mail to this group so it me introduce myself: I’m Andrei and I am a Software Developer at SumUp. I’ve been working in Erlang in the last 2 months and I want to learn more.

I think having a general "Functional Language” group will help to gather enough people to organize a frequent meetup (monthly?). Plus, it’s always a good idea to learn about other languages and their traits.

Hi there

I have talked to nearly all the groups I can think of, and there is definitely interest, we just need a central place to meet.
Can someone ask the people of Engine YArd, I run too many events there already :D

Hi all,

Does anyone on the list from Cork have any interest in something similar?

I am struggling to find a good (non business/networking) tech meet up in Cork and was thinking a general functional orientated group might capture enough peoples attention to make it viable.

Jonathan.
