Hello everyone, at last week's meeting we discussed two issues that must be voted on by the group as a WHOLE. With only 6 people present at the meeting, there were not enough peeps to make a decision on behalf of the entire club. Therefore we decided to include the necessary information to help members make an informed vote!
ASUC Spring 2013 Elections: Endorsing a Candidate
(Full disclosure: I [Sabrina] am a campaign manager for Spencer Pritchard's campaign for External Affairs Vice Presidency this semester so I will not participate in the vote.)
Here are his platforms:
Tenants Rights - Since students often have never entered a lease before they usually do not know the process. Too frequent are students exploited when by greedy landlords. The rent is absurdly high, there is moldy walls, seismically unsafe units, and many more issues that directly infringe on students rights. Essentially, I want to make this process easier for students, so they can feel like they have the power when entering a lease. I want to first research and compile a list of rights and other tips into a brochure. Then I want to hand it out to students through some kind of institutional way, either through my office or the ASUC in general. I think of this as a service the ASUC, aka student government, can provide. Lastly, I want to organize students who are passionate about this and other similarly related issues to push for rent control and tenants rights on the local level. We can team up with the Rent Board and city organizations to fight greedy landlords from jacking up rent prices.
Student Employee Organizing - Very similar to tenants, although revolving around student employees. Again I want to identify the rights students are given, create an institutional process that distributes these resources, and create a movement around fighting for more - in this case it would be working conditions, grievance processes, a fair wage, and a fair and flexible schedule.
Student Mobilizing for Higher Education - Very simple: I want there to be a broad coalition of students and organizations that are focusing on higher education reform in California. I want to be advocating for more money being spent on education, specifically towards the UC, but I also would advocate for CSU and CC and K - 12 too. I want the state to divest from prisons, to increase corporate taxes, reform bogus legislation that stymies progress, such as Prop 13 and Prop 209. I want to build a movement centered around these fundamental issues. Students can have such a key involvement in this battle, we only need a vision and some organization. If elected I will immediately start contacting other groups that have been doing this. I will start on campus, then branch out to the city, then county, state, UC system through UCSA, etc. The time to create these changes is now.

CalSERVE Campaign: 6,000 in Solidarity
A friend who works in CalSERVE has asked me to ask ya'll as a group if we would like to cosponsor this new campaign, here is a the gist of the email:
"The campaign is focusing on reducing the number of sexual assault crimes committed on Cal's campus, where current reporting data reveals that 1 in 3 women will be sexually assaulted before they graduate from UC Berkeley. Our goal is to get as many campus organizations on board and attain 6000 signatures on our petition, which will be sent to the Office of Student Conduct...
By partnering with our campaign we are asking that you and your organization help to promote our campaign by 1) becoming an official co-sponsor and 2)sending our petition out to your board and delegates.
The name of your organization will be included on our petition, as well as posted on our website.
If you, or your organization is willing to help in fighting against sexual assault, please respond accordingly. "
