During Black Music Month, we pay homage to legends of American music, who have composed the soundtrack of American life. Their creativity has given rise to distinctly American art forms that influence contemporary music worldwide and sing to the soul of the American experience.

Barred from expressing themselves in their native tongues, enslaved people developed a language to articulate their hopes, dreams, sense of loss, and tenacity to overcome the harrowing nature of their lives. They used music to strategically and creatively voice their most deeply held feelings. Today, the creative ways that Black music tells stories of trial and triumph in American life continue to move us all to understand the common struggles of humanity. Spirituals, gospel, the blues, R&B, rock and roll, jazz, pop, rap, hip-hop, and more have molded American culture and given rise to new American art forms emulated around the globe.
This month, we celebrate the songs and artists that challenge us to think critically, stand up to injustice, and believe in ourselves. We recommit to expanding the promise of dignity and opportunity for all Americans. And we revel in the sounds, spirit, and soul of some of the very best music ever created.

We celebrated Black Music Month with a concert at WHQR Thursday, July 27 at 7pm. We had a night of great music from gospel to standards to R&B gems. Silivea Johnson, Charles King, and Teddy Burgh all performed and Rhonda Bellamy emceed the evening.
Born in New York and reared in North Carolina, Teddy Burgh started playing flute in junior high school. There was no money for private lessons, so Burgh diligently studied his band music and supplemented his appetite by learning to play along with songs on the radio. Jazz, blues, marches, R&B, soul, and gospel music filled the Burgh house and influenced his musical development. He furthered his studies at Hampton University. After graduation, Burgh found that most bands wanted him to play saxes in addition to flute, so he worked to develop his skills on these woodwinds as well. Burgh is grateful to have shared the stage with artists such as George Duke, Stanley Clarke, Joe Chambers, Kathy Sledge, Yolanda Adams, The Manhattans, Tom Browne, and Ray Charles. In addition to being a Professor, Burgh is an active performer and composer. He also currently performs with the FROG Project, Mangroove, The Port City All-Stars, Vermillion Sands, and other local groups. He and fellow musician and songwriting partner Terry Thompson have recently formed 2 Nice Guys Music Productions
In 1979, President Jimmy Carter declared that June would be Black Music Month. The goal was that this would be a month set aside to recognize the incredible influence that Black music has had on the US and the world. While President Carter created Black Music Month, the first official presidential proclamation recognizing June as Black Music Month was not signed until 2000 by President Bill Clinton. This signing came after Dyana Williams, a renowned journalist and community activist, successfully lobbied for Black Music Month to be recognized by the US government.
