Good Evening,
I am writing to formally express my concern regarding an inappropriate comment made by a coach from the Erial Gold softball team during a recent game ( 6/2@ 6pm on Erial Field) against the Stratford Hurricanes.
During the game, the coach was heard instructing a player on third base, “If the ball goes behind, then just run because the catcher isn’t skinny enough to get up fast.” This comment was directed at the Stratford Hurricanes catcher and was made within earshot of players and others present.
This statement was completely unacceptable. A coach should never use a player’s body size or appearance as part of a game strategy, nor should any athlete have to hear an adult in a leadership position make comments about their weight or body. Regardless of intent, the remark was disrespectful, unprofessional, and had the potential to embarrass and humiliate the player involved.
Youth sports are supposed to promote sportsmanship, respect, teamwork, and positive character development. Comments that target a child’s physical appearance undermine those values and create an environment that is neither supportive nor inclusive.
I would like to know what actions will be taken in response to this incident. Coaches are expected to model appropriate behavior for young athletes, and it is important that situations like this are addressed appropriately to ensure similar incidents do not occur in the future.
I appreciate your time and attention to this matter and look forward to hearing how this complaint will be handled.
I attached a picture of the coach as I am unaware of her name.

Sincerely,
Carly Gray
