Dear Erial Little League All-Star Committee and League Leadership,
We are writing as the parents of Markus McKenzie and as supporters of Erial Little League to better understand the process used to select players for the All-Star teams. First, we would like to acknowledge and thank the coaches, volunteers, and league leadership who dedicate countless hours to providing opportunities for young athletes. We truly value the commitment required to run a successful youth sports organization. Darnell has volunteered as a township lacrosse coach for the past eight years, and we understand firsthand the time, energy, and sacrifice that coaching and youth sports leadership require.
We also want to acknowledge that the baseball community is relatively new to our family. While we have been heavily involved in youth and high school athletics, baseball is a network and culture that we are still learning. Markus has called Erial Little League home for the past three seasons and has thoroughly enjoyed his experience in the league.
From the beginning of this season, one of Markus's primary goals was to earn consideration for one of Erial Little League's All-Star teams. We understand that the league fields two All-Star teams and that roster spots are limited. His coach, Matt Neborak, informed us that Markus was nominated for consideration, which naturally led us to wonder how players move from nomination to final selection and what criteria are used in that process. This question is particularly meaningful to us given the success the Astros achieved throughout the season. As one of the most competitive teams in the division, we wholeheartedly believe Markus contributed greatly to his team’s success. That naturally led us to wonder how players are evaluated across teams and whether athletes from successful teams are represented in the final selections. We recognize that team success alone should not determine individual recognition, but Markus’s contributions to a highly competitive team did prompt us to seek a better understanding of the criteria used to identify and compare players throughout the league.
Markus is a dedicated three-sport athlete who participates in soccer, wrestling, and baseball throughout the year. As a result of those commitments, participation in fall baseball has not previously been a realistic option for him. Throughout the regular season, however, he remained fully committed to his team and the league, attending every practice—whether optional or required—and consistently working toward his goal of earning All-Star consideration. As parents, we believe it is our responsibility to seek understanding when decisions affect opportunities that are important to our children. Our questions are not intended to challenge the dedication of the volunteers involved or the integrity of the process. Rather, we are seeking clarity so that we can help Markus understand the factors that influenced the decision, identify areas for growth, and continue pursuing his goals with realistic expectations and a clear understanding of the standards used for selection.
Specifically, we are hoping to better understand:
One area we are particularly curious about is how fairness and consistency are maintained when coaches may have limited exposure to players outside of their own teams. Markus has played for three different coaches over the last three seasons. Without a tryout process or extensive firsthand knowledge of every player, we are interested in understanding how evaluators assess and compare athletes across the league. If coaches are expected to advocate for nominated players, we would also appreciate understanding how that advocacy factors into the process. From a parent's perspective, a player's opportunity for selection should not be disproportionately impacted by a coach's ability or willingness to promote that athlete. We are simply seeking to understand how the league ensures that all nominated players are evaluated fairly and consistently.
Our family has been deeply involved in youth and high school athletics for many years. I serve as Principal of Timber Creek Regional High School and oversee coaches and evaluation systems regularly, while my husband has dedicated eight years to coaching township lacrosse. In our experience, clear criteria and meaningful feedback help individuals understand outcomes, identify areas for growth, and maintain confidence in the fairness of a process. We are simply seeking that same understanding for Markus. If there is a written description of the All-Star selection process, evaluation criteria, or any feedback that can be shared regarding Markus's candidacy, we would sincerely appreciate the opportunity to review it. Thank you for your time, consideration, and continued commitment to the athletes and families of Erial Little League. We appreciate all that you do and look forward to learning more about the process.
Best regards, Kelly and Darnell McKenzie (Parents of Markus McKenzie)
Hello There Andy Devecchio,
Thank you again for taking the time to respond and provide additional insight into the All-Star selection process. We appreciate your willingness to engage in this conversation. As context, in my role as school principal, I totally tend to view decisions through the lens of systems management. And while your explanation helped us better understand the general process, we are still hoping to gain a clearer understanding of how it was applied in Markus's case. Our goal is not to challenge the decision, but to understand it so we can answer his questions honestly and help him learn from the experience.
After reviewing your explanation, we have a few remaining questions regarding Markus's candidacy and the evaluation process itself. Yesterday, again Markus asked if he made the team, and we are trying to have an honest and constructive conversation with him. It is the parenting vibe we sustain with all 4 of our children (who are multi season-athletes): humility, transparency and a commitment to improve. His coach, Matt Neborak, has been responsive. He informed us that Markus was nominated for All-Star consideration, but your response did not indicate whether he was ultimately among the players considered by the coaches. Can you please confirm whether Markus was nominated?
If he was nominated but not selected, we would appreciate any feedback that can be shared regarding his candidacy. We understand roster spots are limited and many deserving players are considered. Our goal is simply to help Markus understand what distinguished selected players and identify areas for growth. In addition, we are hoping to better understand how the league ensures consistency and fairness in player evaluations. You mentioned that coaches are encouraged to keep mental or written notes throughout the season and later participate in the nomination and voting process. What safeguards exist to ensure all nominated players receive equitable consideration?
For example:
We are also curious about how the process ensures that each season's All-Star team reflects performance during that specific season. What safeguards exist to prevent prior-year selections from disproportionately influencing decisions? For example, if several players from the previous year's All-Star team remain age-eligible, how does the league ensure returning players and first-time candidates are evaluated equally based on their current-season performance? As educators and coaches ourselves, we recognize that every evaluation process involves professional judgment. Our questions are not intended to dispute the decision or the integrity of the volunteers involved. Rather, we are seeking to understand the structures in place to promote consistency, reduce the possibility of error, and ensure all nominated players receive fair consideration.
Most importantly, we are trying to help Markus learn from this experience. He invested time and effort this season, attended every practice, remained committed to his team, and set a goal himself of earning All-Star consideration. Because he is seeking answers, we hope to provide him with meaningful feedback that will help him continue to grow as both a player and a young person. Thank you again for your time, transparency, and service to the league. We appreciate your willingness to answer our questions and look forward to hearing from you.
Best regards, Kelly and Darnell McKenzie
Good morning,
I apologize that someone did not get back to you sooner. I have read your email and will do my best to answer all of your questions and provide as much information as possible. If anything I explain is unclear, please do not hesitate to reach out for clarification.
Let me start with the beginning of the season. Players are evaluated within their age group and division. The head coaches and one assistant coach then participate in the player draft. During the draft, players are selected, and our Player Agent helps ensure the fairness of selections during each round. Head coaches are also encouraged to keep either mental or written notes on players from both their own team and opposing teams, as those coaches will later participate in selecting the District/All-Star teams.
The District/All-Star selection process is a bit different from the regular season draft. To be considered for a team, a player must first be nominated by either their own coach or another coach within that division. A nomination does not guarantee a roster spot; it simply means that the player will be considered during the selection process.
The head coach for each District/All-Star team is chosen through a vote among eligible Erial Little League coaches who have met all required coaching qualifications. Once selected, the head coach determines the roster size, with a minimum of 12 players and a maximum of 14 players.
After that, the player voting begins. All head coaches receive the list of nominated players for that age group. The first round consists of a unanimous vote. Any player receiving unanimous approval is automatically offered a roster spot, pending family acceptance. After that, voting continues by majority, beginning with one vote short of unanimous and working downward until the roster reaches the number of players determined by the head coach.
Regarding statistics, such as those found on GameChanger, I can personally tell you that I do not rely on them when evaluating players. There are many reasons for this. For example, scorekeepers may interpret plays differently, such as the difference between a base hit and an error or a stolen base versus a passed ball. Statistics also do not always provide the context of the game. I have heard of players being praised for multiple inside-the-park home runs, only to learn that the opposing team was playing with just two outfielders, creating unusually large gaps in the field.
I completely understand your concerns, as I have questioned certain selections myself over the years. Please know that ensuring a fair and thoughtful process is always at the forefront of my mind. There are many talented players, and sometimes those talents can be overlooked. At the same time, I am not comfortable relying solely on a one-day tryout, as a player may be having an off day, not feeling well, or dealing with circumstances outside of baseball or softball that affect their performance. It would be unfortunate for a player who had an outstanding season to miss an opportunity because of a few difficult moments during a single evaluation.
I hope this helps answer your questions and provides some insight into our process. As I mentioned earlier, if you have any additional questions or would like clarification on anything, please do not hesitate to reach out.
Respectfully,
Andrew Devecchio
