New Postgraduate Degrees in Health Service Research at University of Wollongong 2011

Two new postgraduate degrees - a Graduate Certificate in Health Services Research and Development, and a Master of Health Services (Research), which were first offered by the University of Wollongong in 2010 are now accepting enrolments for 2011.  These new courses are particularly relevant when there are major pressures on the health system and when reform of health service delivery at state and national levels is the focus of major ongoing discussion.

These courses are aimed to suit the needs of a wide variety of careers including those working in:
• policy, planning and public health units of health agencies
• universities
• health research units and centres
• clinical units

The Graduate Certificate in Health Services Research and Development is the entry level course and is designed to equip students with the basic skills required to both understand and conduct health
services research. It consists of 4 core subjects:
• Research studies design
• Health service research analysis
• Health services evaluation and development
• Health economic principles and research methods

After completing the Graduate Certificate, students can continue on to complete the Master of Health Services Research program.

These two initial courses are the first step in what we hope will be a full suite of programs ranging from short courses to course work masters and doctorates which between them will provide greater
range and depth to education and training in health services research. Our goal is to enhance capacity for both conducting and understanding research that improves health services delivery. This
is why we are focusing on health services research and development, and not just on research. In 2011 these courses will be offered only at the University of Wollongong’s Sydney Business School. The school is currently conveniently located in Liverpool St opposite Museum Station and Hyde Park. The courses will be run at times we hope will be convenient to students and employers. Each of the 4 subjects in the Graduate Certificate will be run for a full day every second Friday for a total of 5 days for each subject.
