DoesMS digital license 'fingerprint' hardware information during the free upgrade / activation and store it (at Microsoft) , so that the next re-install queries MS for the fingerprint and activates Windows 10?

Yes; Windows has always been activated based off a hardware fingerprint though. Windows 10 has just made that process more transparent and with the most recent build made the process of transferring eligible retail licenses to another machine even easier.

A digital license (called a digital entitlement in Windows 10, Version 1511) is a method of activation in Windows 10 that doesn't require you to enter a product key. If you upgraded to Windows 10 for free from an activated copy of Windows 7 or Windows 8.1, you should have a digital license instead of a product key.

The only difference between a traditional Windows license and a digital entitlement is that you no longer have to enter the license key when you install Windows 10 if you have a digital entitlement. Windows 10 will automatically activate. Additionally, and specifically optionally, is the ability to link your entitlement to your Microsoft Account.

Real case from the forum: "How to activate Windows 10? I installed a free version of Windows 10 pro from a tutorial I found on YouTube. Everything worked and I now want to activate windows seeing all of the benefits..."

Sick of the watermark sticking on the bottom right corner of the screen? If you want to activate Windows 10 as in the previous example, we will show you how to activate Windows 10 in 2022 with product key/digital license/CMD.

Step 1. Find Product Key when you are installing Windows 10. (If you have not found your product key, you can go to the fifth part of this page. Start installation first and then locate your key.)

Compared with the activated Windows 10, your monitor will get a watermark in the bottom right corner of the screen. And the personalization settings, critical updates, optional updates, and optional software - include Microsoft apps, downloads, services - will be disabled.

That's where your product key comes in. Your Windows 10 product key is a special receipt that shows you have an "activated" copy of Windows. Every Windows computer has its own unique 25-character product key, and it's formatted like this: XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX.

If you have a digital license, when Windows asks you for the product key, click Do this later to skip the step. As long as you connect to the internet at some point later, you won't be asked for it again.

You can use a product key or digital license to activate your Windows computer. Windows product key vs digital license, are they the same? This post introduces the difference between Windows product key and digital license.

If you purchase a copy of Windows 10/11 from the Microsoft Store app, then you will have a digital license for that device. You need to activate the device with a digital license. However, if you buy Windows 11/10 from Microsoft Store online in the browser, you will have a product key and you can find your product key in the order email.

If you previously installed and activated Windows 10/11 with a product key, then you will also need to enter a product key when you reinstall Windows 10/11 OS. If you activated Windows with a digital license before, then you will also need to activate your computer with the digital license.

If you buy a PC that came with Windows 11/10, then you will have a product key. Generally, you can find your product key either on the device packaging or on the Certificate of Authenticity (COA) attached to your device.

As for the activation, Windows digital license is associated with your computer hardware and is normally linked to your Microsoft account. When your PC is connected to the internet and you log in to your Microsoft account, your PC will be activated.

If you intend to activate Windows 10/11 using a product key, you can enter a product key during the installation. After installation, you can click Start -> Settings -> System -> Activation -> Change product key, and enter your product key to activate Windows 11. For Windows 10, you need to click Start -> Settings -> Update & Security -> Activation -> Change product key to enter the product key.

Windows digital license vs product key, these are the differences between them. You can choose a preferred method to activate your Windows 10/11 computer. Make sure your Windows 10/11 edition matches your license.

Over the years, the installation of Windows has gotten easier and more reliable, and Windows 10 is no exception. In this operating system, Microsoft has made it a lot easier for users to upgrade, but to make it all happen, the company has also had to change how the activation process works.

Update July 9, 2016: On July 29, Microsoft is ending the free offer to upgrade free to Windows 10. Everyone who has upgraded will retain the digital license for the life of the device. If you reinstall Windows 10 with the Anniversary Update, your computer will remain activated.

If your device comes with a pre-installed Windows system, ASUS has already embedded the digital licensing within the motherboard. When your device is connected to the internet, Windows will automatically activate. This means that the product key is embedded in your device and is not provided separately to users, which helps prevent unauthorized use or theft.

In order to convert the computer to use step-up activation (digital license) we had to install the product key that came with the machine (OEM) and then it would automatically change it to digital license subscription.

If you're building a new PC (perhaps one of the best PC builds) with Microsoft's operating system on it, you probably need a Windows product key. Yes, you can run Windows 10 or 11 without a key, but this "inactivated" version of Windows will have an annoying watermark in the lower right corner of the screen and will have some features -- the ability to change wallpaper, for example -- disabled.

So it really helps to have a Windows product key, but the good news is that, if you are replacing a computer that already has a valid Windows key, you may be able to transfer the key to your new PC. We say "may" because your ability to transfer a Windows license depends on what type of license you have, which we'll explain below. However, if you need a new key, check out our article on how to get Windows 11 or 10 for free or cheap.

If you have a transferrable product key, we'll show you how to move it from one computer to another. The method of transfer will vary based on whether you have a "digital" (tied to your Microsoft account) or traditional license (you move the ID key itself).

Unless you have it meticulously stored from the last time you installed Windows, you probably need to find your product key. To find out what type of Windows 10 or 11 product key you have and the key number, we recommend downloading and running Magical Jellybean KeyFinder.

If your key is transferrable and you want to transfer it, you now need to know whether you have a "digital license" or a regular one. With a regular license, you can transfer the product key from one computer to another by deactivating it on the old PC before entering it on the new one.

However, if you have a digital license, that means that the number is tied to your Microsoft account and, in order to transfer it, you need to follow a different procedure which involves deactivating the old PC via your Microsoft account's settings menu.

To find out if you have a digital license, you need to visit the activation settings page in Windows. You can get there by searching for "activation" in the search box and clicking the top result.

If the Activation screen says that you have a digital license, follow the instructions for transferring a digital license below. Otherwise, follow the instructions for transferring a non-digital Windows 10 or 11 product key, also below.

If your Windows license is "digital," which means that it's tied to your Microsoft account, entering the product key into a new PC will not work. The new computer won't activate. Instead, you must follow the steps below.
