In 2021, ultra-high performance concrete (UHPC) for bridge preservation and repair (P&R) was rolled out as one of the innovative technologies in the Federal Highway Administration's Every Day Counts program. UHPC has been a proven solution in bridge construction for connections between prefabricated bridge elements and is an emerging solution for P&R that offers enhanced performance and improved lifecycle cost over traditional methods. UHPC repair solutions are long lasting and resilient, requiring less maintenance and fewer follow-up repairs than conventional methods. The information presented in this document provides background, context, and foundational knowledge to bridge owners and designers interested in using this innovative solution for preserving our Nation's highway bridges.
This report is intended for bridge owners, contractors, and their supporting professionals responsible for design, construction, materials, and maintenance who are interested in including ultra-high performance concrete (UHPC) in their bridge preservation and repair (P&R) toolkit. This document aims to familiarize the reader with the material mechanical and durability properties of UHPC, along with common and emerging UHPC-based P&R solutions. Most notably, the document contains design and construction recommendations for three promising and fastest growing UHPC P&R applications: bridge deck overlays for rehabilitation, link slabs, and steel beam end repair. These recommendations are limited in scope but provide valuable information for all owner agencies considering the development of materials, construction, and design specifications. Lastly, much of the information provided herein builds on previous UHPC design and construction documents published by the Federal Highway Administration in Design and Construction of Field-Cast UHPC Connections (Report No. FHWA-HRT-19-011).

I highly recommend Johnny and his guys. I had previously had my wheels repaired by them and even though the person that had done the initial repair was no longer working with them Johnny stood behind the work and went the extra mile to ensure my wheels were redone to my satisfaction. They do great work and stand behind it!

Your Repair Notification Letter will indicate if your Sewer Lateral can be repaired, rehabilitated, or if replacement is necessary. We the recommended you take the following steps to when moving forward:
1. Obtain Multiple Quotes: Contact appropriately-licensed plumbing contractors to get quotes. Every lateral will have different repair needs, so be sure to ask your contractor about alternative repair methods.
This method, typically called Cured-in-Place-Pipe (CIPP) Lining, uses a seamless felt tube which is saturated with resin and then hardened or cured. This is a cost effective repair option to rehabilitate an entire sewer lateral, please scroll to the bottom of the site for more information about this method.
If your connection to the City's main sewer line is defective, your Repair Notification Letter will indicate that your Sewer Lateral Connection should be replaced. Below are effective options that the City has made available to you to replace or repair your connection.
When is it recommended?
When making repairs to the sewer lateral near the connection to the city main or are replacing/rehabilitating the entire Sewer Lateral and the contractor needs an excavation near the connection.
What is the repair option?
Lateral Connection Replacement by City contractor through traditional excavations methods and does not involve any repairs to the lateral outside the 4ft x 4ft excavation.
When is it recommended?
When the only defect on the Sewer Lateral is at the connection to the City main sewer line. If other work is necessary on the Sewer Lateral, this option might not be the most cost-effective to repair the defective Sewer Lateral Connection.
What is the repair option?
City's contractor assigned to the Capital Project to seal and effectively renew the Sewer Lateral Connection to a newly lined sewer main without the need for excavating to expose the lateral connection. Lateral must be connected to a sewer main on the current capital project.
When is it recommended?
When the lateral connection is defective and there isn't any clear reason to excavate the connection. Can be paired with trenchless sewer lateral lining using Cured-in-Place-Pipe (CIPP) lining repair for a trenchless rehabilitation of the Sewer Lateral. If other work is necessary on the Sewer Lateral and the plumber elects to excavate near the connection, this option might not be the most cost effective to repair the defective Sewer Lateral Connection.
Reconstruction of peripheral nerve injuries (PNIs) with substance loss remains challenging because of limited treatment solutions and unsatisfactory patient outcomes. Currently, nerve autografting is the first-line management choice for bridging critical-sized nerve defects. The procedure, however, is often complicated by donor site morbidity and paucity of nerve tissue, raising a quest for better alternatives. The application of other treatment surrogates, such as nerve guides, remains questionable, and it is inefficient in irreducible nerve gaps. More importantly, these strategies lack customization for personalized patient therapy, which is a significant drawback of these nerve repair options. This negatively impacts the fascicle-to-fascicle regeneration process, critical to restoring the physiological axonal pathway of the disrupted nerve. Recently, the use of additive manufacturing (AM) technologies has offered major advancements to the bioengineering solutions for PNI therapy. These techniques aim at reinstating the native nerve fascicle pathway using biomimetic approaches, thereby augmenting end-organ innervation. AM-based approaches, such as three-dimensional (3D) bioprinting, are capable of biofabricating 3D-engineered nerve graft scaffolds in a patient-specific manner with high precision. Moreover, realistic in vitro models of peripheral nerve tissues that represent the physiologically and functionally relevant environment of human organs could also be developed. However, the technology is still nascent and faces major translational hurdles. In this review, we spotlighted the clinical burden of PNIs and most up-to-date treatment to address nerve gaps. Next, a summarized illustration of the nerve ultrastructure that guides research solutions is discussed. This is followed by a contrast of the existing bioengineering strategies used to repair peripheral nerve discontinuities. In addition, we elaborated on the most recent advances in 3D printing and biofabrication applications in peripheral nerve modeling and engineering. Finally, the major challenges that limit the evolution of the field along with their possible solutions are also critically analyzed. Impact statement Complex nerve injuries, including critical-sized gaps (>3 cm loss of substance), gaps involving nerve bifurcations, and those associated with ischemic environments, are difficult to manage. A biomimetic, personalized peripheral nerve tissue surrogate to address these injuries is lacking. The peripheral nerve repair market currently represents a multi-billion-dollar industry that is projected to expand. Given the clinical and economical dilemmas posed by this medical condition, it is crucial to devise novel and effective nerve substitutes. In this review article, we discuss progress in three-dimensional printing technologies, including biofabrication and nerve computer-aided design modeling, toward achieving a patient-specific and biomimetic nerve repair solution.
