I had to set the compatibility tool myself via steam because I neglected to close steam in step 8 but from my understanding if you close steam before clicking apply, it should set it for you without this explicit step.
I had the same problem! Was looking forward to playing Jade Empire, played it long ago and had a hell of a time, but some how the steam edition doesnt recognize I have steam. FAILED TO FIND STEAM it says. I payed for the game I demand a fix!
No longer working, even with waiting like ten minutes on the AOE2:DE main menu. The menu may not detect it if you open the trainer AFTER opening the game in steam, but it crashes upon loading the scenarios.
