Winnersof the Holcim Awards Silver 2017 for Asia Pacific (l-r): Florian Heinzelmann and Daliana Suryawinata, SHAU, Bandung, Indonesia for Learning center, Bandung, Indonesia. Using simple construction, this microlibrary creatively promotes literacy and community across Indonesia.

Architects Florian Heinzelmann and Daliana Suryawinata from SHAU won the Silver Award in Asia Pacific and view the use of material and passive climate strategies as key to the project's sustainability.

With the concept of a modern urban ruin in the park, parametrically-designed, spirally-arrayed, curved concrete ribs are designed to hold a light-weight roof with a moss-textured finish. Opened to all sides.

Microlibrary Helicoid, Babakan Sari: this microlibrary is designed with flowing geometry, that is a helicoid with dual-usage space while having a minimum footprint. Located in the middle of an urban plaza surrounded by a clinic, a school, a district office and a military base.

Microlibrary Lansia, Lansia Park: The second microlibrary in a lush park in the center of Bandung hosting public musholla and toilets. The faade uses PVC pipes of various diameters and lengths where the large pipes are positioned according to the program they represent.

Each micro-library is undertaken with different partners and funding models. It experiments with material, social and climatic strategies in architecture to address the needs of the community it is intended for. Eight of these micro-libraries have already reached various stages of completion; several more are on the way. By putting together simple components in a creative way, the project achieves complexity with minimal means.

Rotterdam, Germany and Indonesia based-architecture firm SHAU completed a microlibrary- Taman Bima in the city of Bandung, Indonesia, which was made out of 2,000 recycled ice cream buckets. The microlibrary is a small reading facility for community use, which was created by participation of the local community.

The architectural concept is to free the ground for multiple functions, while the library is elevated at the second floor. Continuous stairs allow additional seating area. The facade material is made by upcycling used ice cream buckets. The pattern on the facade is a coding of a message by Mayor Ridwan Kamil, "buku adalah jendela dunia".

The microlibrary covers 160 square-meter in total. The facade of the building consists of open and closed buckets, creating different zones and patterns inside-outside, which also arranges lighting in different scales inside. The 2,000 recycled ice cream buckets provide insulation and scatter light on the first floor of the building.

SHAU design attractive buildings and cities which are socially and environmentally responsible. The individual offices collaborate on a project basis and combine their extensive working experiences in well-established and internationally-recognized architecture firms where they successfully worked on numerous projects on various scales. Eco House Bandung and Microlibrary-Taman Tegelega in Indonesia and Proto Tamansari Workshop are a few of the recent projects of SHAU.

Dutch-Indonesian architecture and design firm Shau has constructed an incredible microlibrary in the city of Bandung, Indonesia that features a cooling facade made up of over 2,000 recycled ice cream containers made of plastic.

The library was constructed using a simple steel structure of I-beams in combination with concrete slabs for the floor and roof. As the building is located in a tropical climate, creating a pleasant indoor climate on a tight budget without the use of air conditioning was essential to the brief. The architects thus looked for a locally available facade material that was cost efficient and could shade the interior, while also allowing daylight to pass through and enabling sufficient cross ventilation.

Shau initially looked at the possibility of using jerry cans with their bottoms cut open to form a breathable facade. Ultimately however, jerry cans in the required quantities were not available. Instead, they opted for ice cream containers, which they bought online from a seller. It turns out to have been a good move as the design team are of the opinion that ice cream containers have a more positive image and further to this, these plastic containers were easier than jerry cans to cut open as part of achieving the necessary cross ventilation through the facade.

To form the facade, the containers were attached to vertical steel ribs and tilted outward to shed rainwater. To accommodate for more harsh tropical storms, translucent sliding doors are located inside that can be temporarily closed.

The use of ice cream buckets not only adds meaning and gives interest to the facade, but the buckets in addition generate a lovely light ambiance by scattering direct light and furthermore acting as natural light bulbs. At night, the illuminated facade takes on a magical appearance.

A Microlibrary Legacy for Indonesia:

The illiteracy and school dropout rate in Indonesia has remained high over the past year, with interest in books and reading declining in interest. A major aim of this project was thus to rekindle interest in books by offering a dedicated place for reading and learning.

The result is a library like no other that is helping to encourage local passion for books and reading while also providing a community centre where people can socialize and read together within a truly delightful environment.

BandungBergerak.id - Setelah bertahun-tahun mangkrak tanpa koleksi buku satu pun, Microlibrary Alun-alun Bandung resmi dibuka, Senin (28/8/2023).
