I would like to access products from copernicus using subsetting and other features of the ERDDAP API.

Can I set up the following dataset as a ` EDDGridFromFiles ` using one of the "data access" URLs in the link below as the cacheFromUrl parameter? Which should I use? Can ERDDAP handle authentication if needed?

example dataset:

Hi Tyler:

I looked at their OPenDAP and other services, and it does appear you have to be logged in and have a "cookie" stored to access their data, and while I am not the definitive word on this, I believe this has been discussed before and their is no simple way to do this in ERDDAP. However, even if I am mistaken and there is a way, as far as I can tell to re-serve the data would violate the Copernicus terms of usage, and despite what I may think of their terms of usage, I don't think we should be encouraging anyone to violate the terms of usage.

Which leaves you three options. The first is to contact Copernicus to see if they would give you permission to download and re-serve the data, which you could do with a Python program or the like. I should warn you that we tried that when Copernicus first started serving the AVISO data, and got nowhere with the request, which is why we serve an alternative SSH product.

The second thing you can do is to contact Coastwatch Central (coastwa...@noaa.gov) - they have some sort of agreement with Copernicus and are already serving some of their data, and see if they can and are willing to serve the SSH data. But if this is the AVISO data, AVISO has a complicated license, it is free for non-commercial use but not for commercial use, and unless access is restricted to the dataset in ERDDAP, this would cause problems.

The third option is to use a different SSH product that already is on an ERDDAP.

Probably not the answer you wanted, and I may be mistaken on some parts of this, but I think the main gist is correct,

Hi Tylar:

I should add one caveat. If your only use of this internal, for the creation of a value added product, then to the best of my knowledge it is kosher for you to get a Copernicus account, use Python or some other language to download the files, and then have those datasets require a login from ERDDAP. Again, to the best of my knowledge, the value added product is free to be distributed.

HTH,

-Roy
