How to convert an ArcMap shp. File in an Erdas aoi. File
By till.schalofsky in ERDAS Software Forum

Hallo

How to convert with Erdas Imagine 10 an ArcMap shp. File in an Erdas aoi. file.
I have a ArcMap shp. File.

This represents a marginal single division, this border area as I want in Erdas aoi. File use. However, I do not know how I need to convert this file to a aoi. File obtained.
The aoi. File wants to use a classification limit.

Converting from a shapefile to an AOI is not intuitively obvious.  It took me several tries to figure it out but it is quite easy once you get the process.

1.  In an ERDAS 2010 viewer display the shapefile.  I have found it best to have only the shapefile in the viewer.  Multiple data layers may lead to confusion about the coordinate and projection of the AOI file.

2.  Select the polygon(s) you want to convert to AOI.  You can either select them on screen with the cursor or open the attribute table and select the polygons by attribute.

3.  The function ribbon should be set on Drawing through this action.  If it is not, click on the Vector Drawing tab.

4.  In the upper left corner of the Drawing ribbon you will see an Edit area with Cut, Copy, and Paste icons.  With the polygon(s) selected (highlighted in yellow), click the Copy icon.

5.  Now click the Paste icon (looks like a clipboard with a piece of paper hovering near it).  This creates the AOI file on the screen, as signified by the dashed lines surrounding the yellow areas.

6.  In the Table of Contents right click on the AOI file and select "Save Layer".  Navigate to the subdirectory where you want to save the file, assign a name to the AOI and save it.

Always make sure that the .shp file is in the same coordinate and projection system as the imagery you are using.  You can reproject shapefiles but you cannot reproject AOI files.  If the AOI file is not in the same projection as the image it will not collect data properly

Another point also is that nowdays Erdas has added .shp reading capabilities in many places. So in practise where you need .aoi you can also try from possible input format is .shp directly available there. In many new functions it is in many old functions it is not.

Otherwise I agree with Don that .shp to .aoi goes very straightforward - after you have learned ho to do. Copy-paste in practise in both directions.

In longer run it would be nice to have decent import/export tool for .aoi too.
