[erdas-l] export raster footprints

Is there any way in Erdas to export only the margins of a raster (for example the footprint of a satellite image) as a vector file, and if so does it support batch processing?

You can generate a footprint of a raster image in two ways:
Mosaic Tool. When adding a raster to the mosaic tool click the Image
Area Options tab and select "Compute Active Area." Now click the Set
button and set the boundary search to either Corner or Edge.
-- Corner if you want the footprint to be the rectangular
representation of the image ignoring the background values. This would
be a classic footprint of a satellite or aerial image.
-- Edge if you want a polygonal description of the actual non-zero area
of the image. If your image represents a specific area, i.e. an island
with all of the ocean values converted to zeros, this option will draw a
boundary around the island.
After the image has been loaded into the Mosaic Tool, click File -
Annotation and save the footprint file as an .ovr file. You can convert
the .ovr file to a .shp file by loading it in a viewer, selecting it and
the click Vector -- Add Selection to vector.
This is not a batchable process. However, you can kind of batch it by
loading multiple images at once and the Tool will create a footprint for
each image. When converted to a .shp file each polygon will be itemized
in the same order of the mosaic table, thus you can attribute the
shapefile accordingly.
The Image Catalog will generate the classic footprint of an image as
well, but I do not know of an efficient way to export that graphic to a
.shp or .ovr file. If it did so, this would be a very useful way to
batch a footprint collection.
