Does anyone know if it is posible to convert RGB images (.tif) into greyscale using erdas? For some reason I can't open the images in any other software package e.g. corel to covert them there.
Thanks
Natalie

Hello If I undstand you well, you can do this by importing your image to Erdas, through Import from main menu, after import you can select grayscale from display option in raster option ~in the viewer file menu. |

Natalie,
use Import/Export --> Export (TIFF). Select both input and output files and proceede with OK. Select "Export band selection" --> Grayscale (and all other parameters You intend to have) --> OK.
This should work!
Good luck,
Rudolf

To get more SD, you can use PRINCIPAL COMPONENTS, instead of RGB to IHS. But you will loose some standart model reference.

Listers,
Please note that export to grayscale is the same as viewer greyscale - you have information from a single band!
RGB to Greyscale is rather a transformation of a combination of 3 channels to grayscale palette.
Thus, Adrian gives the right suggestions.
Photoshop's method can be applied with spatial modeler.
PS uses 59% for the green, 30% of the red and 11% for the blue channels for conversion factors
or
<grayscale>=0.59*G+0.3*R+0.11*R
Other technique is the saturation removal - to compute the desaturated image you actually compute the lightness component (intensity) - I guess more or less like the IHS method.
L=[max(R,G,B)+min(R,G,B)]/2
however this result has poor contrast

Yes Natalie.
You can use IMAGE INTERPRETER/SPECTRAL ENHANCEMENT/RGB to IHS.
Then extract the first band (IMAGE INTERPRETER/UTILITIES/SUBSET) from the IHS image.
If you prefer, you can rescale the last product to 8 bits using IMAGE INTERPRETER/UTILITIES/RESCALE
To get more SD, you can use PRINCIPAL COMPONENTS, instead of RGB to IHS. But you will loose some standart model reference.
