Use the "Image Command Tool" under "Tools" to create true GeoTIFFs. You will need to know the correct projection, spheroid and datum. In the old ESRI tfw formats, that was done by a piece of paper (bad idea). Then we created GeoTIFF to store the horizontal and vertical projection information.

If you want to batch 4000 of old tfw file, make sure you use the variable tool in the batch tool to turn your coordinates to variables rather than the coordinates from the first image you choose. There are options for all four corners, but you will only need to set them for the UL corner.

As an example, I changed the following in the Batch Tool:
imagecommand '$(Input)' -map 7.5546645875100000e+005 3.7606059286930002e+006 3.0000000000000000e+001 3.0000000000000000e+001 meters UTM -projection 'C:/Program Files/ERDAS/Geospatial Imaging 9.3/etc/projections/UTM_WGS_84_N.plb' 'UTM Zone 17 (Range 84W - 78W)' -meter imagecommand

to:
imagecommand '$(Input)' -map $(Input.Lrx) $(Input.Lry) $(Input.CellWidth) $(Input.CellHeight) meters UTM -projection 'C:/Program Files/ERDAS/Geospatial Imaging 9.3/etc/projections/UTM_WGS_84_N.plb' 'UTM Zone 17 (Range 84W - 78W)' -meter imagecommand

In this example I changed the cell size just in case one .tfw file defined one cell different and I would keep that difference.

This will not create a new TIFF, but turn the old ESRI tfw file into a true GeoTIFF. See my blog for more on GeoTIFFs, but not on batching: http://field-guide.blogspot.com/2008/05/what-is-wrong-with-my-geotiff.html

Hallo!

I have tiff files with worldfile .tfw. How can reproject images to
different coordinate system in ERDAS? I have problems use ERDAS, Data
preparation, Reproject images, because on desktop software show error
message ProParameters not found. How can create ProParameters in ERDAS?
Maybe is another way to reproject images in ERDAS?

All,

As well, I should have mentioned that you can batch-assign projection parameters quickly and easily via the Image Command Tool in ERDAS IMAGINE and LPS.

From the IMAGINE main menu:

1. Tools > Image Command Tool
2. Enter the first image from your list.
3. Select Change Map Model > Options. Choose your map model settings.
4. Select Change Map Projection > Options. Choose your projection settings.
5. Select Batch.
6. In the Batch Commands dialog, select Modify Commands Automatically, then Next, then Next again.
7. Select the Select Files to Add icon. Highlight your input image list using standard Shift+Click and Ctrl+Click mouse commands, then select Next.
8. Select either Start Processing Now or Start Processing Later At to run the job. (Start Processing Later At... uses the Windows scheduler, and thus requires admin privileges in Windows.

From the FAQs at http://gi.leica-geosystems.com/LGISub2x0x0.aspx:

Total Records: 1

1. Q. Error in reprojection: proparameters not found

A.
For an image to be able to be reprojected, it must have an original projection assigned. Many images, especially TIFF images with world files, carry no actual projection information, only corner coordinates. The proparameters error message refers to the lack of projection information in the image itself. You may add projection information manually to your original images easily, if you know the original projection details:

1. Open the image's Image Information dialog.

2. Select Edit > Change Map Model. Add the appropriate information.

3. Select Add/Change Projection. Add the appropriate information.

Always add/change the map model first, then add/change the projection. The image now carries its original projection, and can be reprojected in ERDAS IMAGINE.
