Continuous to Thematic

I have a shape file that I converted to a raster. Now that i have the file in a .img format, it thinks the image is continuous. I need to change the file to thematic. In the Image information dialogue box, I tried to change the layer type, but nothing happens when I select that choice. Any Suggestions?

Re-compute histograms first (especially for 16-bit images in Direct mode), using skip values 1 and 1 (every pixel).

And make sure file (and folder) is not read only. Also sometimes I have had troubles to do this trick if file is something else than Imagine .img. With .img files I have been succesfull always.
