Re: Cannot print ECW to PDF from CAD 2010

As for making the PDF file, make sure your settings have been made reasonable in the Adobe PDF printer preferences dialog. Adobe sets the resolution to 600 dpi out of the box. Rarely does that work for images. Go to Printers and Faxes > right click on on Adobe PDF, choose Printing Preferences, change the resolution to 300 (there are several places to change it, you'll have to search those places out). Save these settings in a new file, make sure that new settings file is used by AutoCAD. Normally after a restart of AutoCAD the new settings file will be in use.
You can also move the raster quality slider 1-2 notches to the left in AutoCAD if you still have problems making the PDF. Print dialog > Properties > Custom Properties. There is a raster quality slider in that dialog somewhere. You may be surprised at how little the quality is affected and how much faster the PDFs or hard copy prints are made.
Large ECW files won't be manageable in tiff format. You'll need to cut the ECW up into tiles.

Thank you for your reply. Unfortunately everything short of tiling the image did not work for me. I'll try tiling when I have the time to mess with the image.
I have been back and forth with Autodesk for the last two weeks over this issue and the best they can tell me is that my computer isn't awesome enough to handle what I'm trying to do. It is in the budget to get a new computer within the next few months, we'll see if more RAM helps then I guess.
I didn't think my current system was that bad but it is a little dated compared to what's out there.
WinXP SP3
2.4ghz dual core
2 gigs RAM
Plenty of HD space available
I'll try to tile the image I guess....

I may have told you the raster quality slider is in the Custom Properties dialog. From where I am writing the reply, I can't see the original post. The slider is in the Properties dialog which is within the Print dialog but I don't think it is in the Custom Properties dialog.
We've had this problem many times, and almost in every case the combination of proper adobe PDF printer preferences and the raster quality slider will correct the issue. Cutting the ECW into tiles could make the problem worse.
Your hardware is not the problem. Autodesk probably does not have a clue about how to make this PDF print. I have been down this road with them and they have not been able to tell me what to do to make it work.
The hardware is not a problem. We have 64-bit machines with 8 GB of RAM that will not make PDFs or hard copy prints when large images are involved. Once I change the printing preferences for Adobe PDF and move the raster quality slider, the prints / PDF files start coming out on machines with as little resources as yours - 2GB of RAM and 32-bit Pentium 4 machines.

Thanks for you reply.
I have found where to slide the Raster Slider for DWG to PDF, but am unable to find the same function for Adobe PDF.
It didn't work when I used it for DWG to PDF.
I have gone into the standard printing preferences for Adobe PDF through the Printers and Faxes area in control panel (as well as in CAD, custom properties, when printing) and turned everything I could find as low as possible, also w/o any change. I still get the "attempting to cancel" error half way through print and I still get a PDF with no image.

Not sure where the slider is for DWG to PDF. I wonder if you have found a different slider. I am thinking you should have the Adobe PDF printer selected in the AutoCAD print dialog, then click on Properties, then click on Raster Graphics. The slider should be visible at this point. I've included a few links to some screen shots of the dialogs.
You may want to send me screen shots of where you've changed the resolution for Adobe PDF. I won't be at my work computer until Monday - that is where I have AutoCAD and the Adobe PDF printer driver setup. I could send you screen shots of the Adobe PDF resolution settings on Monday. Maybe I could even send a job options file.

Ya that slider isn't there for my Adobe PDF printer, but it is there for my Bullzip & DWGtoPDF options. I just tried moving the slider all the way to the left for the Bullzip one and still... no image.

To the left is what prints out, to the right are the settings I tried.
I won't be in Monday but would appreciate all your help, thanks!

How about detach the image, save the DWG, then bring the image in again using Map > Image > Insert. I see that you are using the Civil 3D version of AutoCAD. This has the Map image handling functions. Once you've done this, try making the PDF again.
We can talk about this more on Monday.
