Image Segmentation In ERDAS Imagine 9.3.2
By Jake_OSU in ERDAS Software Forum
I am trying to create vegetation polygons in ERDAS Imagine using the Classifer > Image Segmentation function. I've made about 40 different files with the function but have yet to get the polygons to match up sufficiently with my NAIP 2009 imagery. I've used combinations of all of the parameters with and without edge detection, and used different combinations of input stack files such as a principle components layer, texture layers, and the original 3 band imagery.
It is very difficult to get a working method to hone in on the best parameters to use, any suggestions?
Thanks,
Jake

Segmentation has nothing to do with vegetation. Segmentation just extracts equal areas from imagery. So based on parameters it tries to find homogeous regions in scene. In some case it might follow some type of vegetations in many cases not.
To get your vegeation out you need to classify your segments to based on their pixel values, shape, texture etc.
So in practise you should give your segements as a seed to some different tool that makes calssification and gives you the vegetation polygons. In Erdas terms it means Erdas Objective module.
