Hello all,
I new to Imagine and therefore the setup process. After
installing Imagine and the license manager, when the program is launched
I get the following error:
The HOME directory "(H:/Users)" is not writeable. Please make
sure it exists and that you have the necessary permissions to write to
it.

I have skimmed the documentation and looked at all of the system
and personal defaults in the Properties app but cannot find one for the
HOME directory. I have also googled this with no results!

The software is installed on a Dell 650 workstations (dual HT
processors), Win XP SP 2.

All help is appreciated! TIA!

This is from a search on HOME directory in Imagine Help:

How IMAGINE Reads Preference Files

Here and elsewhere, <IMAGINE_HOME> refers to the directory where ERDAS IMAGINE is installed on your system. Preferences are saved in these files:

  • User preferences are saved in $HOME/.imagine[version]/v8preference.

  • Global preferences are saved in <IMAGINE_HOME>/defaults/v8preference.

When IMAGINE starts, it reads, in this order:

1. The default preferences, set by Leica Geosystems GIS & Mapping,

2. your system's global preferences in <IMAGINE_HOME>/defaults/v8preference, and then

3. your own preferences, in $HOME/.imagine[version]/v8preference.

Each subsequent preferences file overrides any that were previously read.

Hope it helps!

In your case, it looks like these Windows variable are set:
HOMEDRIVE=H:
HOMEPATH=\Users

This may be set either by a login script or in the User Properties dialog,
Profile tab.

It seems that either H:\Users is read-only or maybe that H: is not being
successfully mapped.

IMAGINE takes the Windows home folder, defined by HOMEDRIVE and HOMEPATH,
and uses it as $HOME (and $PERSONAL, I think) within IMAGINE.

Check to see that you currently have an H: drive and then check whether
H:\Users is writeable.

Marc,
Thanks for pointing me in the right direction... We do use home
drives pointing at H:\. I did see $PERSONAL in the environment
variables for System and Personal. Some of these variables I was able
to change to an explicit location. However some of the items changed
back to $PERSONAL even after setting the variable. Anyone have any
ideas?

BTW we are using ver 8.7...thanks!

Shawn,

From http://gi.leica-geosystems.com/lgisub.aspx?pid=2&sid=166&ID=0#218:

Q. User's home drive not found, not writeable

A. Regarding the installation problem, ERDAS IMAGINE is looking for the
X:\ drive to find the "users" folder created during the installation in
the Windows profile of the logged-in user's home drive. In your case, it
seems that the non-admin user's Windows profile resides on a network
drive. On a default Windows machine the logged-in user will have the
IMAGINE directory created as C:\users. There are three options to work
around this:

1. The best option is to go into the environment variables on the
workstation and create two "user environment" variables. To set the
variables, right-click on My Computer > Properties > Advanced >
Environment Variables. Under User Variables, select New.

Variable1: Variable name: HOMEDRIVE Variable value: C:

Variable2: Variable name: HOMEPATH Variable value: \

Then create a folder named "users" on the C: drive. ERDAS IMAGINE should
start as long as the license file has been loaded.

2. Option 2 is to have a "users" directory created on that remote drive,
but all users would need full access to this drive.

3. Option 3 is to have the users log in to the machine locally where the
default C:\users would be used.

There's an even easier way to do this.  We have this problem every time we get a new class.  Solution:  our home directories are on a network drive called X:.  Go to a command prompt window, type md x:\users.  Very simple, works every time.

Shawn,

Just create a 'Users' folder on your h: drive. Imagine doesn't write a
significant amount of stuff to it, preference data, file history and
such like, so it shouldn't slow you down

Yup. The only thing wrong with Windows is that DOS wasn't broke, but 'they'
fixed it.
