The International Indian Film Academy Awards, popularly known as IIFA, is an annual awards ceremony for Bollywood. Produced by Wizcraft International Entertainment Pvt. Ltd, the winners of the awards are decided by fans, who vote online for their favourite actors from the Hindi film industry. Instituted in 2000, the ceremony is held in different countries around the world every year.
The IIFA Utsavam is the South Indian segment of the annual IIFA Awards. The awards were introduced in 2016, around the films released in 2015. The 1st IIFA Utsavam was held on 24 and 25 January 2016 at the Gachibowli Athletic Stadium, Hyderabad, India.[1]
The first awards were presented in 2000 at The Millennium Dome in London, United Kingdom. From then onwards, the awards are held at locations around the world signifying the international success of Bollywood. Since 2000, the event has expanded from a one-night event to a three-day celebration, hosting various events and activities relating to the Indian film industry.[2]
These awards honour films from the previous calendar year. Salman Khan has been the Brand Ambassador of the IIFA since its inception in 2000, five special awards were introduced: Star of the Decade (Male and Female), Movie of the Decade, Music of the Decade, and Director of the Decade.[3]
In recent years, the airport has organized airport operations, security and VIP arrivals for several high profile events including the Republican National Convention and the Super Bowl, but nothing compares to the large scale starpower and fan interaction associated with the IIFA awards.
Speaking about hosting the awards at the IIFA press conference earlier this week, Abhishek Bachchan said, "There is a huge responsibility when you are hosting, we have to ensure that we celebrate our cinema in the most correct, dignified and respectful way possible. I am not somebody who likes to take digs at other people. I find that incorrect, so you won't see too much of that. Do stuff that is entertaining, keep it light and keep the audience engaged," news agency PTI quoted Abhishek Bachchan as saying.
The awards in the technical category were announced at the IIFA Rocks on Friday. Gangubai Kathiawadi led the pack with three awards. The list of winners of the main category will be announced tonight.
Hrithik Roshan bagged the trophy of Best Actor in a Leading Role at International Indian Film Academy Awards (IIFA) 2023 on Saturday in Abu Dhabi. He received the trophy for his action-packed performance in Vikram Vedha, which also starred Saif Ali Khan. Alia Bhatt won Best Actor in a Leading Role (female) at IIFA 2023 for Gangubai Kathiawadi. Producer Jayantilal Gada received the award on behalf of Alia, as the actor's maternal grandfather, Narendra Razdan, is reportedly not well. Bollywood fantasy film Brahmastra: Part One - Shiva and the biopic Gangubai Kathiawadi were the big winners at this year's IIFA. Brahmastra: Part One - Shiva won many of the awards on Saturday evening at the gala, including Best Playback Singer for Shreya Ghoshal (female) and Arijit Singh (male), as well as Best Supporting Actor (female) for Mouni Roy.
Earlier on Friday night at IIFA Rocks, Sanjay Leela Bhansali's period biopic Gangubai Kathiawadi won several awards in the technical categories, clinching trophies for cinematography, screenplay and dialogue. The film, about real-life gangster Ganga Harjivandas Kathiawadi, a mafia head in 1960s Bombay, stars Alia Bhatt in the lead.
A special court in Mumbai has allowed Bollywood actress Rhea Chakraborty to travel to the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Dubai to attend the International Indian Film Academy (IIFA) awards from June 2 to June 5 [Rhea Chakraborty vs Union of India].
