What makes a great action hero? Sylvester Stallone (Rocky) and Arnold Schwarzenegger (FUBAR) relied on their strength and physicality. Jackie Chan (Rush Hour) and Jean-Claude Van Damme (Bloodsport) used martial arts to their advantage. Bruce Willis (Die Hard) and Kurt Russell (Escape from New York) proved that wittiness and toughness go a long way. Now, most action stars in 2023 wear costumes in superhero movies.
The Matrix is one of the most influential sci-fi action films of all time. Following it up with a sequel that improved upon the original was an impossible task. The Matrix Reloaded is not better than The Matrix, but it deserves more credit than critics initially gave it in 2003.
Chapter 2 increases the choreographed action sequences but makes them more intricate and elaborate. However, the secret to any John Wick movie is Reeves, whose actions speak louder than words as he kills whoever and whatever gets in his way.
In 2014, Reeves was at an interesting moment in his career. Once Jack gets on that bus, the movie never takes its foot off the gas. When Jack solves one problem, another one pops up as the bomb threat remains throughout most of the film. Speed transformed Reeves into a believable action star, and the movie reignited the summer blockbuster industry. It was his brain, not his muscles, that saved the day. It also helps that Reeves had unbelievable chemistry with his co-star, future Oscar winner Sandra Bullock (The Lost City).

In a dystopian future, Thomas Anderson (Reeves), better known by his hacking alias Neo, is a computer programmer who discovers the Matrix, a simulated reality run by machines where humans are trapped and used as an energy source. Neo is brought by the mysterious Trinity (Moss) to Morpheus (Fishburne), who offers Neo a chance to learn the truth of the Matrix. Neo accepts and joins the war against machines.
There's nothing quite like a great action movie to pump some excitement into the box office. Netflix and all of the major streamers may have action flicks of their own, but they rarely seem to be able to match the quality of the movies that were made for the big screen.

When his passengers are taken by hostages, Brodie has to team up with accused murderer Louis (Colter) to rescue them, get them back on the plane, and get the plane back into the air.
Why it's worth watching: This irreverent action-comedy is inspired by the true story of a bear who gets into a bunch of cocaine that was dumped in the woods. Sure, the real-life bear didn't go on a coked-up killing spree, but where's the fun in that?

Moviegoers can't seem to get enough of the action flick. Good or bad, it's usually two hours when viewers can escape reality. Cage won an Oscar for his role as a down-on-his-luck alcoholic in 1995's Leaving Las Vegas, but he's also done well in the action genre. Mainstream hits like The Rock, Face/Off, and Con Air made Cage a bona fide action star and showed a bit of his creepy side on-screen. Though the 2000s weren't nearly as successful for Cage, he showed up well in the adventure thriller National Treasure in 2004.
The pride of Hong Kong has done a nice job of mixing his martial skills with some solid comedic timing, thus becoming one of the biggest action stars ever. It took some time for the former stuntman to enjoy mainstream success, but he ran with it when he did. Rumble in the Bronx (1995), the Rush Hour films, and even his voice work in Kung Fu Panda are some highlights of Chan's lengthy resume.
As one of the better actors to take on the role of James Bond, Craig certainly gets a spot on this list. However, he had some quality action roles under his belt before taking over Bond from Pierce Brosnan in 2005, such as Lara Croft: Tomb Raider and Munich. He also should be noted for his high-impact work in Defiance (2008), Cowboys & Aliens, and even the 2017 heist comedy Logan Lucky.
Versatility is what makes Crowe one of the greatest actors of this generation. That includes his ability to take on action roles, none more so than in Gladiator (2000), for which Crowe won the Best Actor Oscar. He went for it again with such films as Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World, 3:10 to Yuma, and Robin Hood. Though, some would argue his off-screen life might be even more action-packed.
