Dear friends

I thought I might kick off the discussions on this list (and make sure I’ve configured it right!).

I would love to understand everybody else’s background, so please feel encouraged to throw in your own introduction!

By way of background if you don’t know me, in the context of eResearch education and training, I’m a former academic, a former university IT director, I’ve been in the eResearch sector for twenty years now (before we called it that), was closely involved in the establishment of Intersect , ANDS and RDSI, and worked with most of the other eResearch programs over the years. I’ve been doing a bit of teaching/training/workshops throughout most of those roles and it is an area I’m keen to develop further. Since taking on this AeRO role I’m interested in a more strategic, collaborative and nationally ‘joined-up’ approach and to see where AeRO can help.

As mentioned at the eResearch conference BoF, I’d like to help develop a more structured collective approach that we can all participate in and benefit from. I’ll send a separate email to kick that thread off too.

Thank you all for joining this discussion!

Cheers,

Markus

Hi Markus / all

Thanks for the kick-off!

This is a bit of my background.  The rest of it is on LinkedIn - https://au.linkedin.com/in/annekealley

I started off as a secondary school teacher trained in fine art and mathematics.  After some years I switched to mainstream public service in the WA Department of Agriculture, working in a variety of administrative roles (and added a B.Bus in Management & Information Management).  All up I have been in the higher ed sector for 21 years having worked at the University of Western Australia and ANU and been responsible for HR, finance, research admin, student admin, IT and marketing in a centre, research school and colleges (faculties) covering areas as diverse as library, science and oil & gas engineering (and added a Grad.Dip in O&GE). During that period I spent 3 years in IT at ANU including 12 months as acting Director of IT.  Now at CAUDIT, and with that background, I am really interested in how we break down ‘silos’ and organise to work collaboratively, focused on a clear goal.

Cheers
Anne

Hi all - thanks Markus and Anne for getting us started.

I worked in eResearch and research data related roles from 2006 until 2014 at Victoria University of Wellington, Monash University and Griffith University. About a year ago I returned more to my library roots in a role managing a team that looks after library systems and scholarly content management systems at Griffith University.

I have a few interests in the eResearch education space, including:
  • how librarian skills and knowledge can be applied in eResearch support
  • synergies between eResearch training and existing research skills development programs (e.g. information literacy oriented activities in uni libraries)
  • for professional staff, ways of providing some structure for on-the-job training including communities of practice (like this one), job shadowing, project secondments etc
  • integrating eResearch skills (esp. data management) into core curriculum e.g. mandatory research methods courses associated with postgrad coursework and research programs
I'm a bit out of this space now but very happy to lurk and contribute where I can.

Cheers
Sam

Thanks Markus, Anne and Samantha,

I have a technical background - PhD in computer science (algorithm research) and worked as a software engineer in IT industry for 6 years before joining New Zealand eScience Infrastructure (NeSI) as a supercomputing consultant in Dec 2012.

I am currently managing NeSI's training programme and we have delivered 7 Software Carpentry workshops across NZ in 2015 to increase the awareness of researchers' digital literacy.

My main interest in education/training is introduction of more advanced computing training (eg. HPC) based on the SWC model.

Cheers
Sung
