Good Morning,

I have been dispatching a lot of advice through the email to the extent that despite good intention on my side; it might not be all that effective communication to you. This notwithstanding, we have limited time to get you acquainted with what it takes to talk and walk as a leader, and will thus continue with the same but note the following while encouraging the various team leaders to create their own mail list for internal group communication …..

As a Recipient

As a Sender

To avoid constant distractions, turn off automatic notifications of incoming e-mail. Then establish specific times during the day when you check and take action on messages.

Make messages easy to digest by writing a clear subject line and starting the body with the key point. Use boldface headings, or numberings ro highlight action items – and to note who is responsible for each one.

Don’t waste time sorting messages into folders; with inbox search engines – this is unnecessary.

To eliminate the need for eliminate the need for recipients to open very short messages, put the entire contents in the subject line followed by ‘eom’ – end of message.

Don’t hightlight messages you intend to deal with later by marking then as ‘unread’.

Minimize email pin-pong by making suggestions e.g. “ Should we meet at 10?” rather than making open ended suggestions e.g. “When should we meet?”

If you won’t be able to respond to an email for several days, acknowledge receipt and tell the sender when you are likely to get into it

Before you choose “reply to all’ , stop and consider the email burden that your choice places on each of the recipient. If you would not be able to justify the burden, remove the recipient from the ‘send list’.

For your own sake, send less e-mail; an outgoing message generates, on average, two responses.

I have selected the following reading materials for the Day with the accompanying Group allocations for discussion;

Ø  Ben Horowitz – When Smart People are Bad Employees – Team J – Leadership - Equity Group Foundation Lead by Dr. B Chuma and Evans Njuguna

Ø  A G Lafley – Former P & G CEO – I think of my failures as a gift – Teams B, C and D led by Saddam, Rachel and Munywoki respectively – Discuss Failure and seeing setbacks as opportunities

Ø  Mfonbong Nsehe (from Forbes Magazine) – Why Africa may never produce a facebook – Teams F and I led by Mosiany and Kamunde – Discuss from a point of view of using Innovation and Entrepreneurship to create wealth – Do we need Venture Capital backing or Innovation/Incubation Centers?

Ø  Failure – Lehman Files for Bankruptcy – This article is the main one produced by New York Times on the day the largest bankruptcy ever declared by Wall Street came to be – I have gone further and shared a mini-biography of the man who was at Lehman Brothers’ helm then and maybe some extra information on where all the leadership characters are currently upto…Could Teams A and J led by Mitchel Opaka and the coalition of Chuma/Evans Njuguna take the lead on discussing this – basically what they will talk of is whether the Wall Street guys lied or not and if so, could a leader with patience/perseverance weathered the storm better?

Ø  Is the Life you are living worth the price you’re paying for it – Teams A and J led by Mitchel and the twin leadership of Chuma/Evans Njuguna to talk of the price of success that any pre-university have to pay through patience/perseverance in order to gain the type of work ethic required of any great leader? Any negative commentary against this is healthy debate….

Ø  The World Atlas of Social Networks – Bruce Upbin – ALL Teams to take  a look at the amazing picture of the company that uses the colours by the code RGB #3B5998 i.e. Facebook and reflect on how ALL of us could join the facebook group by the name EQUITY BANK PRE-UNIVERSITY MENTORSHIP AND ALUMNI GROUP

Ø  The 20 Most Powerful People in African Business – From Forbes Magazine – Dr. James Mwangi among other 19 Africa make the list full – Teams  G and H led by Napwora and Mongare to ask their members – Why not an Equity Scholar in the future? Is there anything to prevent us?

Ø  Why Some People Have all the Luck – By Anthony Tjan – CEO of Cue Ball – Teams G, H and I led by Napwora, Mongare and Kamunde to objectively debate whether their members need luck or have what it takes?

To all the team leaders who have shared their members listing and gone ahead to create their internal mailing lists with me as an honorary member – we really appreciate – Team I led by Simeon Kamunde have a great Logo that shames those of you who are yet to know what this ‘challenge’ is all about.

There is also a few things we need from your end;

Ø  We will share a leadership Curriculum with you sometime today or tomorrow, Could we challenge you to input into its structure and development under the leadership of your team leaders?

Ø  All of you need to start preparing draft CVs/resumes and we will get as many U.S Colleges students  on summer break in Kenya and also alumni of the programme to come help refine, polish and critique them for you during the August Conference

Ø  If I Share the profiles of the speakers for the August Conference, have you read and understood the materials I have been sharing with you to the extent that I could book you a live interview with our speakers for the benefit of the rest of the scholars who will be sat down listening to objective and concise answers to your questions? If so, how is your group going to prepare you for the same? Could you start by assuming that you are interviewing your fellow  group members and kindly do maintain the communication within the group email lists?

Finally, let us maintain objective discussion and stop spamming other people’s emails with trivial messages; if you are going to email anything – let it be something you will stand up and tell an African President during the August Conference….

Have a most pleasant day….
