Good Morning,
Today, let us discuss the honor code – a set of values that defines each one of us. I hope that you will be able to discuss among your groups (and be copying me in the same).
Here is the story;
The Pre-University Scholar’s Honor Code
Preamble
The rise in the number of pre-university scholars’ intake to this year’s level of 247 has in itself presented a unique challenge in the way we ourselves do conduct and relate while working in the branches and at the head office.
It is evident from our conversations with most of you that you do hold in high esteem the honor and privilege to be an Equity Scholar - a lifetime accomplishment and more so in terms of the work ethic gained and networking opportunities to be achieved. Our observations further reveal that being polite, resourceful, hardworking and considerate in all your dealings with the rest of the Equity community as attributes you hold dear to.
In order to standardize our conduct and avoid unbecoming situations, we need something new that sets the expectations we have of each other — something that will require our participation in creating and later on ratification – the honor code of us by us.
It will hence serve as a call to all Equity Scholars to adhere to and uphold the code of conduct throughout their duration at Equity Bank and later on as productive, ethical, and caring members of the African leadership and professional community.
The Code – A draft to be edited, debated and discussed by you through your Teams
As a lifelong member of the Equity Scholarly Community, we envision that you will always adhere to the principles of truth, integrity, and respect, and in doing so refrain from lying, stealing, cheating, other social vices nor tolerate those who do so.
Ø By the virtue of being an Equity Scholar, kindly recognize your role in the Equity Scholarly community:
• My purpose is to undergo a work ethics experience, learn the value of saving and creating wealth, leadership, innovation, mentorship, entrepreneurship, and professional development not only in my time in the bank but across my lifetime as an active and valuable member and contributor to the alumni community.
• My decisions and behavior affect the well-being, perception, and treatment of other pre-university scholars both inside and outside the Equity community, today and tomorrow.
Ø Therefore, I promise that:
• I will manage my time at Equity with loyalty and care, and will not advance my personal interests at the expense of the bank or my fellow pre-university scholars.
• I will understand and uphold, in letter and in spirit, the laws and contracts governing my employment with Equity Bank and the processes and procedures that govern my daily work as an employee.
• I will refrain from engaging in fraudulent and corrupt activities, unfair treatment of customers and fellow staff members, or engaging in unethical business practices harmful to my employer and the society at large.
• I will protect and uphold the human rights and dignity of all people I work with, and I will oppose discrimination and exploitation.
• I will not engage in unprofessional and harmful personal and romantic relationships both within and outside the Equity community.
• I will report my performance as a Pre-University Scholar accurately and honestly.
• I will invest in developing myself and other fellow pre-university scholars, helping the alumni and networking community to continue advancing and creating sustainable and inclusive leadership for all.
• In exercising my professional duties as a Pre-University Scholar and according to the stated principles, I recognize that my behavior must set an example of integrity, eliciting trust and esteem from those I serve. I will remain accountable to my peers and to society for my actions and for upholding these standards.
This oath I do make freely, and upon my honor.
