Note: When uploading content, the media file is unavailable while processing (transcoding, creating thumbnails, auto-generating captions). However, you can navigate away from the upload page to work on other tasks. If another user attempts to access the media file in the topic before processing is complete, a message prompts them to wait for the media file to become available. When processing is complete (or the uploaded media file is invalid or corrupted), a notification displays from Update alerts in the navbar, with a link to the organization homepage. Depending on the file format of audio and video files, they might not play in a web browser by default. The Optimize for Streaming option in the editing tool enables users who want to manually transcode original versions of the files, for example, to reduce the file size or enable multi-bitrate streaming.
Note: This topic explains editing video files uploaded from the Classic Content Experience and New Content Experience (Lessons). D2L recommends using the desktop experience when editing video.
Depending on the file format of audio and video files, they might not play in a web browser by default. All uploaded audio and video files are transcoded only when necessary. All MP3 and MP4 video files are saved in their original form because they can play in a browser without transcoding. Other files, such as WMV and AVI, which would not play by default, continue to be automatically transcoded on upload. The Optimize for Streaming option in the editing tool enables users who want to manually transcode original versions of the files, for example, to enable multi-bitrate streaming.
Note: You can also find all saved videos using Media Library. Refer to Media Library overview for more information. The Download option may not be available depending on your organization's setup. Contact your administrator for more information.
I got as far as actually loading my video from the digital camera onto the computer and into a folder. Now I need to edit it using Windows Media Player. I want special effects like transitions and credits, but I don't know what to do. I basically know how to play the clips in Windows Media Player, but that's just about it. Step by step instructions will be extremely helpful. Thanks.---Jackie
But if you don't want to install any plug-in for your Windows Media Player and looking around for a powerful movie editor for your Windows computer, here I recommend you try another powerful movie editor, Wondershare Filmora.
Editing and making video with Filmora is very easy, below is a brief tutorial video about how to make your first video with Filmora in few minutes. But if you want to read a more detailed and complete guide, please check our Ultimate Guide for Beginners: How to Edit Videos with Filmora.
The Filmora comes in as a handy video editor that keeps both of your original video and audio quality intact. The video editor is also fully-packed with a variety of useful features (note: you can click the underlined texts to learn more info about this feature):
SolveigMM WMP Trimmer Plugin is the plug-in tool that enables you to save a favorite movie fragment, music part or edit out unnecessary scenes that are loaded onto Windows Media Player. With it, you can get rid of unwanted parts from your webinars, remove ads from TV shows, create ringtones for your iPhone and etc. It also supports the AVI, WMV, ASF, WAV, WMA, MP3, MPEG-2, MPEG-1 and etc.
1. The trimming process will be accompanied by a progress bar and can be canceled anytime. When the trimming process is done, you'll get a pop-up window that will direct you to the output folder where the edited files have been saved.
2. This plug-in for Windows Media Player only provides a trim function. If you want to crop the black bars, rotate 90 degrees to make it normal, or apply transitions between different video clips or etc; please check out the other solution in Windows Movie Maker.
Tips: Windows 10 Photos app and the Windows Movie Maker (for Windows7) is a free and easy video editing software for Windows users. Both of them provide you with basic video editing features like trimming, rotating, cropping, etc. Although the Windows Movie Maker has been discontinued by Microsoft, you can still download it from third-party platforms. Check this guide to know how to edit videos in Windows Movie Maker.
If you are running Windows 10, you can create and edit videos with the built-in Photos app. Check this guide to learn detailed information about How to Create and Edit videos in Windows10 with the Photos app.

VLC video editor, VLMC, seems to be coming, although there is no download and only source code is available on its official site. The media player VLC also comes with some basic video editing features, and we'll show you how to edit video with VLC in this article. But if you need a better video editor with more editing features, you should really try VideoProc Converter AI, a free and easy-to-use video editing tool.
VLC has long been known as a free media player. But the hidden features in VLC are far more interesting. Just to name a few, VLC also works as video editor, DVD ripper, and video converting tool. But don't expect it to meet all your video editing needs. It is by no means as professional as Adobe Premiere Pro, iMovie, or even Photos, the Windows 11/10 built-in video editor.
As we mentioned before, VLC also comes with some video editing features. It allows you to cut, rotate, crop, merge videos, and more. Thanks to its rich format support, this program can edit videos in almost all formats.
Note: The Windows version now supports AI-powered Super Resolution, Frame Interpolation, and Stabilization to enhance video and image quality. These AI features are not yet available in the Mac version but will be coming soon.
So technically, VLC media player cuts your video in a video recording way. Besides, if you are running VLC on a Mac computer for cutting a video, there will be some differences from the steps mentioned above, and please refer to how to cut a video using VLC on Mac.
From the drop-down list of Transform, you can choose Rotate by 90/180/270 degrees, Flip horizontally or vertically, Transcope or Anti-transcope. Or just turn on the Rotate option and set a specific rotate angle.
Color correction settings and some others are also available in VLC. But to add text, watermark, or subtitles, VLC is not a good way to go. As we said before, you can't even adjust the font size. If another software with more editing features is still needed, try VideoProc Converter AI, a video processing tool for entry-level user.
Check out the list below (only visible on computer) for what edits you can do with VLC. From our experience, you better not add text with VLC. There are no options of font style, font color or font size. VideoProc Converter AI and Photos are two good and free alternatives.
VLC is absolutely a good free video playing and editing tool. But sometimes it is just not good enough. For example, you can't stabilize shaky video in VLC. As we mentioned before, "Add text" in VLC needs to be improved. Besides, splitting video is not that easy to operate in VLC. Given the editing features VLC lacks, another easy video editor needs to stand by.
