A year ago, I helped my brother leaving the hospital after almost 30 days hospitalized. He suffered a motorcycle accident, injuring his left foot with more than 20 fractures. After six intense reconstruction surgeries, the prognostics were not good. The blood was not reaching his toes, and doctors suggested him to proceed with amputation. Later a tough night alone, he decided to proceed. He went to his last surgery, removing his left foot and part of his leg. Neither him nor I could imagine the learnings from this experience, from facing and creating a new life style to complex mental health challenges associated to this fate.

And we faced reality right after leaving the hospital. I noticed he was the center of the attention, with people looking and pointing to him with pity. I knew he realized the situation, but we decided to go quietly in a short commute to his home. I recalled when the taxi stopped in a traffic light, a driver riding a very similar motorcycle stopped at his window. In less than 10 minutes after leaving the hospital, he was already dealing with many challenges that he could not anticipate or imagine. That moment, it became clear he was about to deal not just with the amputation challenges, but with his mental health too.

Days after the accident, I saw him more active, positive and really committed to take the best from this experience. A breakthrough moment happened when he started physiotherapy. There he met more amputees, including babies, kids and adults. Some experienced an accident, some experienced a congenital disease, some totally depended on others to survive. Not his case at all. By sharing experiences like this, I became even more compassionated about people with disabilities.

Following all the medical advices and enjoying insurance and a good financial situation, my brother had access to great doctors, clinics, physiotherapists and psychologists. He received an amazing support from his family, co-workers and friends. In 90 days, he was already testing prosthetics legs, and in six months after the accident, he entered the church walking alongside my sister, celebrating her wedding with our family and friends. He is already running, cycling and experiencing a normal life.

Throughout this journey, I talked to him several times. In one of these calls, we realized the following: the worst disability is the perception of people about people with disabilities. Why? Because people with disabilities need to overcome their own challenges and face a society that do not consider (and believe) they are capable. My brother became disable at the age 48. He knew his life would be totally different in terms of employment and education if this accident happened when he was 18 years old.

2) Interacting with people with disabilities: compassion and empathy are great, but it cannot turn into a superior feeling, segregating or assuming someone with disabilities as inferior. The way you look to someone with disabilities may tell a lot about you.

3) Inclusion of people with disabilities: this is a task to everyone, including you. By focusing on abilities, creating the right environment and treating people with disabilities correctly, we can create a better society, and leverage the amazing knowledge and contribution from a diverse set of talents.

We have an opportunity to improve lives of more than 1 billion people with disabilities if we all become aware of the challenges and commit to create inclusivity. With my work, I am experiencing first hand how technology is positively impacting people around the world, and I am positive we will change our society. I hope private sector leaders, especially human resources, get involved in this dialogue and better support their employees and initiatives to hire more people with disabilities.
