Dear EPUB Working Group Members,
Last Friday the IDPF published a draft of use cases and requirements
for lightweight content protection technology for EPUB, available at:
http://idpf.org/epub-content-protection. Comments from members and
other interested parties are requested by Friday, June 8. The document
describes requirements for a potential content protection scheme for
EPUB. It outlines what would be a “lightweight” scheme, occupying a
middle ground between strong DRM and DRM-free.
Comments are particularly solicited regarding the priority of this
activity versus other potential IDPF-mediated projects. Also requested
are comments on any additional high priority use cases and
requirements not encompassed in this initial straw-man document, and
regarding the overall desirability of a solution embodying the
proposed requirements, or any standardized solution in this area.
Note that at this stage this is not a confirmed IDPF project so we are
not soliciting technical comments or comments about the details of any
potential development process but rather comments at the
business/product level about the use cases and requirements and
overall priority. So you may want to forward or gather feedback from
the right folks within your organization.
Some further information about our consultant Bill Rosenblatt's
perspective on the overall content protection landscape for digital
publishing and other spheres of content will be conveyed in his talk
at the IDPF Digital Book 2012 conference in two weeks time (BEA NYC).
See:
http://idpf.org/digital-book-2012/program#content-protection .
And, apologies for the marketing, but we have limited seats remaining
so I'd encourage you to register soon if you plan to attend. The IDPF
member discount code was communicated in our email bulletin, I won't
repeat it here since this email list is publicly archived but you can
email me if you did not receive it.
Thanks,
--Bill
