Message from Tessema -EPS-NA President
As you may know, the initiative to form a Ethiopian Academy of
Sciences (EAS) in Ethiopia is showing great maturity. There is now a
proposal to involve in the discussion the broadest possible
professional community including planning for a conference in
Ethiopia. The visions, goals and objectives of EAS are articulated in
the attachment by Prof. Masresha Fetene. EAS aims to empower
Ethiopians with unbiased, and knowledge based recommendation on a
broad range of issue affecting their livelyhood. It is therefore
critical that a broad range of professional organizations participate
in elaborating the great goals but also in seeding it financially and
possibly participate in sustain it. The question is what can EPS can
do?
I understand it is a major challenge for EPS-NA to get involved in big
way at this stage of its formation. However, it would be a pity if we
miss this historic opportunity and not do anything about it. I
suggest that we all study the proposal, we get involved in this open
discussions forum and should help with identifying funding sources.
As EPS-NA we should plan a fund raising activity to help with the
initial conference. A goal of $4,000 from EPS would be modest but
quite galvanizing in challenging other professional organizations.
Perhaps it would be appropriate to coordinate our donation with the
EPS office in Ethiopia.
